I was part of the the First Anglico Group to serve with the ROK 'Blue Dragons (Chung Yong Bodae), in 66-67. Your book brings back memories so vivid--I still want to pop a smoke when I hear choppers, love walking in the rain, drink OB beer (Maek-ju), and still feel secure when I'm around Koreans. We didn't call each other counter-parts, we were just 2 man teams, operating at the Korean Company level. Call sign was Ya Ja Sue 14C-3rd company, 1st battalion. Thanks for telling the ANGLICO story, It's amazing that so many Marines never heard of us. Both our living and our dead Anglico Brothers deserve and appreciate you telling our story. Never talked much to my children about Nam but I think I'll share your book with them. In Hawaii, the Anglico 1st platoon, which was called the airborne platoon, had a saying, "No sky too high, you call we fall." Semper Fi, Scott--God bless you and all Anglico Marines. Meet you on radio watch for the Sky Pilot. If everything is Alpha Sierra, key your handset 2 times. Don't call any Naval Gunfire on VC pack animals (LOL)
Excellent book Scoot did well with his book. I was in the 1st ANGLICO subunit 1 unit to be attached to the ROK Marine Blue Dragons .We were deployed from Hawaii August 1966 as the first Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company. One of my fellow Marines from this unit also wrote a book "Lighting from the Sky Thunder from the Sea..We recently had a reunion with 6 of us from 1 st ANGLICO subunit 1 Vietnam 1966-1967.We rented a houseboat in Fort Lauderdale Florida. I t was great alot of fun sharing stories and seeing each other.Like Scott Leis we were all an important part of the Vietnam War supporting the ROK Marines. We were radio operators that were FORWARD observers ( that meant we were out foward of the action ) We controlled The air support and Naval support.We guided the planes and helicopters and Naval ships. Semper Fi!!
I really enjoyed Mr Leis's memoir, very readable, one of very few english language works regarding ROK troops fighting in Vietnam. 1st person account, the reader follows Mr Leis through his extended tour in Vietnam. at battallion level, as a radioman/liason with the South Korean (ROK) 2nd Marine Brigade. Stationed south of DaNang, units of the ROK 2nd Brigade engaged with the enemy on a regular basis. There seem to be very few works available that deal with, look into, the substantial committment of ROK allies in this conflict. A fairly casual glimpse into living and fighting with ROK Marines. The author is likable, his writing is honest, sincere, I would recommend this book, absolutely.
The pig in this story came jogging on the beach behind me before daylight one morning, alarmingly; a long time ago.
An amazing TRUE STORY, it brings back so many Memories of the Vietnam Era from a very different view.
Very interesting.
Very well written and very interesting and highly recommend.
Down to earth and obviously written by someone who "walked the walk" and all the heroes that walked with him.Thank you Scott
