I had to learn enough Ruby in three days (starting with zero knowledge of it but with programming experience in other languages) to build an interface for my company's warehouse to download fulfillment orders from a particular shopping cart API. TIme was of the essence. This book allowed me to do the job. I read it in three days and started coding. I had to look a few things up on the internet before I was done, but without this book I wouldn't have even known where to begin.
I am a retired programmer who has programmed in various languages, Perl being my favorite. For me, the book was a pleasant and enlightening read. I would recommend it to new or seasoned programmers who want to get a good start with Ruby. I have also done a good deal of technical writing over the years. From that standpoint, I feel this book was written very well, and nearly error-free (from what I could tell).
Easy to read, but definitely just a "quickstart". Might be subtitled "Look what I did with Ruby!"Interesting programs, but much lacking in explanation of Ruby itself.
This book is very easy to read and very useful.If youre a beginner, this is the best book to start. I have a couple of book of Ruby and Rails and this is the best to start.
This book is pretty darn good and somehow gets right into details while keeping it very accessible. Note that I'm a professional programmer so many things are obvious to me. However, it may be fine for a newbie too as it's fairly "gentle".I really like that in the section on Strings he shows the difference in what happens in memory between + and << for concatenation (joining two strings). The later does NOT create an additional object in memory. He slips this kind of detail into the book while still keeping the reader from getting confused IMO. Nice intro book with just a bit more content and details than you'd hope for! Cool!Note that if you're a hardcore "go straight to the most authoritative book" type of person you may not like this. You know who you are ;) I'm more of the type that gets through a couple tutorials and then gets the most authoritative reference next.
I had started learning PHP but kept hearing a lot about Ruby on Rails. Before jumping into Rails, I decided I wanted to quickly review Ruby. I picked up Ruby: Visual Quickstart Guide and I haven't been disappointed. The Visual Quickstart Guides teach by providing step by step exercises. I find that it's a great way to quickly learn programming conventions that I would not have picked up by scouring the web for examples. The pace is quick and easy; I finished all the exercises in a few days. For those of you who are familiar with object oriented languages, you'll go through this book quickly. The only parts that took more time were the last 2-3 chapters where Ullman introduces various Ruby Gems and Rails. It's worth a read to get an introduction of the language and learn the conventions.
The Ruby Visual QuickStart Guide is a great introduction to the Ruby programming language. It is well written, the examples are well thought out, and the chapters are well organized. The explanations are simple enough for beginners to grasp, and yet the author never talks down to the reader.I believe that the book would make a great text book for a beginning programming course. It would also be appropriate for intermediate level Ruby programmers who are looking to review many of the important concepts in Ruby.I highly recommend this book.
