About the Author

John Pastor is an ecologist and professor of biology at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, where his teaching and research focus on the natural history and ecology of northern ecosystems. Pastor is the author of Mathematical Ecology of Populations and Ecosystems, is co-editor of Large Mammalian Herbivores, Ecosystem Dynamics, and Conservation, and has authored or coauthored 22 book chapters and over 120 papers, mostly about the North Woods. He is co-chair of the Natural History Section of the Ecological Society of America.

John Pastor’s collection of essays is a must read for those of us interested in the natural history and ecology of the Northwoods. Pastor’s style is ehtusiastic and comprehensive, without falling prey to lecturing. He explains the natural history of the area, laying the groundwork for his essays on the interactions, and evolutionary skirmishing of the flora and fauna of this geographic wonder. This collection of writing includes something for all levels of ecological knowledge, starting simple/general in each section, and like peeling the layers of an onion, going deeper and deeper into the subject matter, concluding each essay with suggestions for future research.I particularly liked the essays: The Shapes of Leaves (why do they come in so many shapes and sizes); Voles, Fungi, Spruce and Abandoned Beaver Meadows ( though not addressing the 1999 blowdown, I do recall studies being done on red backed voles in the blowdown area; and Predatory Warblers and the Control of Spruce Budworm in Conifer Canopies ( as my bit of land has been inundated by budworm, in particularly devestating in pure stands of balsam fir, and not so much where fir and Spruce are intermixed with Aspen, Birch, Ash, and Maple).From the concluding text of Pastors essays: “Go into the woods, meadows, or beaches near your home, lookaround, and pay attention. It matters not whether you begin with a data sheet, a Field notebook, or a sketch pad. You will be surrounded by organisms that pose questions about their connections to each other and to the landscape... You will be off and running to a deeper appreciation of the natural history of each organism and it’s beauty.” I might add, just go off into the woods and re-instill that childhood fascination for nature, and allow that fascination to feed the deeper understanding for the natural history, flora and fauna of the Northwoods, or wherever you live. John Pastor’s What Should a Clever Moose Eat Natural History and Ecology and The Northwoods is wonderful stimulation to get outside, and back into the woods.

While this book is somewhat academic, the information is presented in a clear manner and in a narrative style that makes it very readable. Pastor puts the ecosystem of the northwoods into context and shows how each element is affected by change. Illustrated with lovely pen and ink drawings by the author. I loaned my copy out, and regretted it when I wanted to review the science behind seasonal leaf color changes.

I only wish there were books this good when I took Ecology for majors. A book I can recommend to university bond grandchildren oruse as a text.

Good collection of essays on the North Woods biome/ecosystem. Great essays on beavers, warblers, leaf shapes, and fire ecology, among others. The writing is engaging and scientific without being dry. If you like natural history writing, this is worth a read.

Very interesting climate change histaria a little over the top.

Really just a series of scientific articles pulled together into a book. The ideas could have been expressed better without some of the side trips.

Its very heavy use of passive voice makes it a tedious read, despite the thorough and insightful content. So not recommended.

About the Author

Joseph Mayo practices architecture in the Pacific Northwest where he concentrates on materiality, technology and form for a regionally appropriate building culture. He has worked on a variety of building types, ranging from schools, student housing, university buildings and hospitals. Working with a City of Seattle Department of Planning and Development (DPD) Advisory Committee, Joseph led an investigation to use wood in applications that go beyond current building codes. He has also been a jury member for wood design awards, served as Regional Associate Director for the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Young Architect Forum (YAF) Chair at AIA Seattle, and has assisted in teaching courses and served on architecture critiques at universities around the Pacific Northwest.

I've gone through the Powerscore Logic Games Bible, as well as Manhattan's Logic games book (3rd ed). I thought both of them were pretty good, but I still struggled with the Logic Games section after reading them.I recently finished The Blueprint for LSAT Logic Games, and personally, thought it was the best overall book for logic games because:1) No big issues with the book. While MLSAT LG and the LG Bible are definitely great books, they have their own share of issues. The LG Bible has an unnecessarily complicated and non-intuitive approach to sequencing games (powerscore name)/relative ordering games (MLSAT name). On the flip side, MLSAT's approach to conditional grouping games/in-out games is a little bizarre, and rather unwieldy; I'd rather use regular conditional chains.BP LG, on the other hand, doesn't have any particular weaknesses in its chapters (at least none that I can find). However, everyone learns a little differently, and others may find MLSAT LG or the LG Bible's explanations/methods more helpful. That just wasn't the case for me.2) BP LG is an easy read. The Logic Games Bible has great info, but is presented in a rather dull fashion. This is true to a lesser extent of the MLSAT LG book - slightly more interesting, but not to the degree that BP's book is. Granted, no one reads an LSAT prep book for entertainment, but who says learning has to be boring? Someone of the jokes do fall a little short, but the book has a ton of solid comedy gold.3) Presentation. The format for all three of the LG books are a little different, and I prefer BP LG's. If I remember correctly, Powerscore introduced the game type, showed you their notations for the rules presented in the game type, had a few drills to internalize the methods, and then gave you some games to apply the newly learned techniques. MLSAT is largely similar except that they have you play the game first, without any coaching, and then proceeds to show you how to approach the game type. Also, towards the end of the book, they have a section where you repeat all of the games you've played in the book with a line of advice per question.BP LG shows you how to approach the game type, presents you with drills, then walks you through a game using their methods, so you can see how they are applied, after which you are given a game to try them out on your own.

If only I had this when I needed it! It brings a humorous way to get where you need to be to tackle the logic problems and achieve better results in your scores. So it is not difficult to read and more enjoying than other similar books. The steps are brought to you in a concise, easy to understand format. This blueprint takes you from beginning to end of a problem and its stragedies will help prepare anyone that practices. I recommend this book to anyone preparing for the exam. Even f you're not preparing for an exam there is many ways this book can change your views on tackling problems. I received my copy of free of charge for an honest review.

Blueprint was by far my favorite LSAT prep. Video explanations for this book are great. Strategies are clear and easy to apply. Presentation of the material is about as interesting as you can make it. I made huge improvements on my speed on the logic games section of the LSAT. I went from finishing about 2 games to finishing the entire section. Definitely recommend.

I have used Blueprint online course (Movie 2.0) and I find this book more helpful than the online product. This book does a better job explaining the small steps required to get the deductions. Online moves through the material very quickly and misses some very important facts in the process, the book moves slower and help understand how the deductions were arrived at.

I got the Kindle version and the book itself is really helpful! Blueprint is great about making the LSAT user friendly and surprisingly fun - I like the characters it uses like the Ninja or Cleetus, and their explanations are easy to follow. However, the book is hard to navigate on the Kindle as you can't skip around as easily or write directly on the games. Also for someone already taking the BluePrint LSAT course, it was fairly repetitive. I thought there would be more examples of each game type to try on my own, but it's mostly lessons and walk throughs.Definitely a great way to go if you're just starting out learning logic games! Less useful if you're just looking for extra practice.

The content itself is pretty good and it's written in an engaging manner.The Kindle version leaves something to be desired though, with a wealth of formatting and typographical errors, and in at least one case the questions and answers aren't even paired up correctly.

Taking a Blueprint course concurrently, this books supplements that strategies taught in the class and provides additional practice. It has helped me improve in logic games and as always includes the humor typically associated with Blueprint, which makes it enjoyable to read. I highly recommend his book to anyone preparing to take the LSAT and particularly those needing extra practice in logic games.

This book is gold! But you definitely need to have some basic knowledge of how the LSAT works before you begin on this book. It is a little difficult at some places and there are not as many practice problems as I hoped there would be. Overall, a great quality product written by a knowledgeable author.
