Singing Away the Hunger : The Autobiography of an African Woman, by Mpho 'M'atsepo Nthunya

From Library Journal

This implausible memoir is from a woman who experienced extreme adversity, suffering the loss of six children and her husband and then struggling to support her remaining family as a domestic worker. It is the narrative of a woman with a primary education who speaks eight languages and once had a prosperous farm. Nthunya is also a storyteller, relating how her mother was expected to marry someone her father selected for her, thereby collecting a bride-price. But her mother prayed that she would die, only to have her father and husband-to-be pass away instead. Another tale concerns the author's brother-in-law, who put a cruel spell on her and her children after her husband died because she wouldn't allow him to step in as their father, as is the custom. Eventually, three of her sons died, and she blamed her brother-in-law. A tragic, depressing look at life in South Africa; recommended for collections in African folklore.?Ann Burns, "Library Journal"Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From the Back Cover

A compelling and unique autobiography by an African woman with little formal education, less privilege, and almost no experience of books or writing. Mpho's voice is a voice almost never heard in literature or history, a voice from within the struggle of ""ordinary"" African women to negotiate a world which incorporates ancient pastoral ways and the congestion, brutality, and racist violence of city life. It is also the voice of a born storyteller who has a subject worthy of her gifts - a story for all the world to hear.

Singing Away The Hunger, is an account of Mpho 'M'atsepo Nthunya's experiences in Africa. Born in Lesotho in 1930, she gives a detailed insight into the types of dress, people, jobs, and attitudes that were common during that Era. She gives us a grave look into her experiences with the racism present during the South African apartheid on a first-hand basis. She begins the novel in a very structured time line she starts retelling her story as a young girl, who lives with her very poor mother, who is a borderline religious zealot. Even going so far as to tell Mpho's brother Sephefu, " You must not give Mpho anything. God will feed her. She will not die" (p. 14). She continues the time line describing her experiences as she matures from a girl into a young woman, and the somewhat comical "kidnapping" that lead to her double-marriage to her husband Alexis (pp. 30-33). Keeping the same structured storytelling, she recalls stories about how she went from being a prominent herder (p.63) to a poor woman after the death of her husband, barely able to provide for her children on the meager amount of pay she was making working for the University or in people's homes as a type of live-in maid (pp.118-132).I liked the unrelenting manner in which taboo and "private" information was easily given and spoken about as an accepted as a way of life. Mpho did not censor her words or the situations in any way. Her life story was presented as raw, emotional, and unrelenting. The editor had one simple goal in sight, to get Mpho's story across honestly and starkly, in order to make a lasting impression on all who read Mpho's book. I was also thrilled with the fact that the editor used the foreword to stress this point. That this novel is Mpho's and that it is Mpho's story to tell. The only critique I have of the book is that it tends to jump around a bit. Mpho will introduce a topic but not fully explain it until later in the novel when the topic is reintroduced and intertwined with a second topic she is discussing, only to then later tie up the loose ends of both topics. This in no way draws away from the character and telling of the story, it is more of a personal annoyance.Singing Away The Hunger, is a must read book that I have already recommended to so many friends and colleagues. It is one of the most riveting, attention-keeping autobiographies that I have read to date. It gives incite into the various cultures and customs present in early-mid 1900s Africa . A very intelligent woman, Mpho speaks eight languages and has the ability to relay her stories in vivid detail. Often as I was reading the book, I would have no trouble picturing and imagining Mpho's surroundings or actions because she has a great gift of being able to narrate a story in such a way that the reader is sucked in. All the trouble and struggles Mpho experiences, only seem to increase her internal strength and drive, while leaving her with an appreciation for the tough life she has had to live through, and leaving the reader with the knowledge that someone will always, always, always have it much worse than you do. This book reminds me that even on the worst day, of the worst week, of the worst month, of the worst year of my life, that I am infinitely more well off than massive percentage of people on Earth, and that I should be grateful for all the opportunities and privileges that I possess. This book truly is as Mpho refers to it, a mohlolo, a miracle/wonder.

Mpho `M'Atsepo Nthunya narrates her life story to her American friend and Editor Kathryn Kendall. Mpho is a Lesothosian woman of seventy years, who has a story that she desires to be made known to her people and others. The general trend throughout the autobiography is economic struggle. As a child Mpho wore a sack as a dress, ate grass, and endured the cruelty of her grandmother. In her adult years she dealt with an evil brother in-law, lost of property, bouts of unemployment, and a myriad of deaths. Throughout her life she struggled to require the needed resources for herself. Mpho finds stable employment, which is something that is hard to obtain for women. While in school, Mpho learned many languages including English, which allowed her to translate her story to Kendall. Mpho dropped out of school early and married Alexis and went to live in the Maluti Mountains. While in the mountains Mpho bore five children, all of whom survived to adulthood. Mpho lived well in the mountains because Alexis had a good job in the city and would send her money; those around her deemed her rich. But when Alexis died, Mpho is left to take care of her five children on her own and those in her house. Sometime later, Mpho moved to the city and went through a plethora of jobs until she found work as a maid at a University guest house. It was at this place that Kendall and Mpho met and became good friends. By the time Mpho writes this book she has experienced the deaths of her mother, multiple in-laws, three sons, and is struggling to provide for her nine grandchildren and daughter-in-law.The autobiography is extraordinary because it is created by a woman with only a fifth grade education among people who are generally illiterate. As the eldest of her family, Mpho is responsible for the passing down of history, culture, and stories. Which makes her exceptionally qualified to ornate her life story in an understandable way. A discrepancy maybe present because Kendall was the one who asked the questions to Mpho, the questions may have been shaped by Kendall's experiences or presumed knowledge of native life. Also, Mpho may have shaped her answers in a way that she believed her audience would like, emphasizing some things while leaving out other things. During the making of the book Mpho was present to instruct Kendall on how to edit her book. Though the author spoke English, she did verbalize that it was easier to tell the story in her native tongue, thus she could not express herself to the extent she desired. It would have been better if the writing style was not so scattered, the book was written in a quasi- chronological format. Throughout the book is sprinkled flashback moments that in my opinion disrupts the flow of the chapter and makes it difficult to map out Mpho's life. Yet still, her story was so compelling and interesting to me that I went on a search for the editor to express to her personally how much I enjoyed Mpho's autobiography.

If you are reading this review, the chances are you've never slept in a rondavel, drinken joala, or visited a sangoma. You may have a motsoalle, but you probably didn't know what to call her. This autobiographical book of stories by a Bathoso woman is absorbing and entertaining, well worth the read on that basis alone. A true and honest look at Lethoso culture as it was and is experienced by one woman is an unexpected bonus. Thanks to M'e Mpho for telling her stories and to Limakasto for bringing them to us.

Interesting book by very hard working woman with an amazingly hard life. If you're interested in Lesotho, this is a good read.

Learned a good bit about the customs held in s.Africa. plenty of deep topics addressed in this book from a woman's role to alternate medicines.nice read

Singing Away the Hunger: The Autobiography of an African Woman is or a nice look at Lesotho through the eyes of a Basothan lady. The means available to Lesothans to provide for their families is limited: work in hazardous mines or seek work in South Africa. Mpho M'atsepo chronicles the story of her life: the loves, hardships, hunger and heartbreaks. The narration alternates between different periods of her life which confused at times. She also changes tenses frequently during her telling. However, both lend a sense of credibility to this autobiography because (as explained by the editor) she transcribed Mpho's words almost verbatim.

Review

This is one of the most thoughtful and well researched books on giving that I have had the pleasure of reading. The frameworks presented in the book can be used by people at all stages of experiencing the joy of generosity. -- Waters Davis, President of National Christian Foundation HoustonI greatly enjoyed reading God and Money! God used the framework Greg and John described to challenge my perspective and practice of generosity. I realized in reading their book that my personal bias is more saver and spender than servant. What I truly desire to be is a fully surrendered servant of Jesus. This book gave me practical frameworks to move in that direction. -- Todd Harper, President, Generous GivingThe mission of Harvard Business School is 'to educate leaders who make a difference in the world,' and in John and Greg that mission has been fulfilled abundantly. It has been my privilege to be their teacher, their colleague and now their friend; and I wish them Godspeed as they take the transformative message found in God and Money out to their community and to the world beyond. I have learned to expect great things from them, and they have yet to disappoint. -- Derek van Bever, Senior Lecturer in Business Administration; Director, Forum for Growth and Innovation, Harvard Business SchoolJohn and Greg realize what everyone should know-that middle-class Americans are among the richest people in world history. It's time for Christ-followers to understand that God has bigger purposes than increasing our standard of living-He wants us to increase our standard of giving. -- Randy Alcorn, bestselling author (from the Foreword of God and Money)

I thank God that he inspired John and Greg to write this book. I actually had the privilege of reading one of the early versions they wrote in 2015 when they were still at Harvard. In fact, it had a major transformative effect on myself, and my family’s life, and in the way that we think and act regarding the wealth that God has blessed us with. I am 52 and prior to reading this book, I had never asked myself the really important and tough questions like: How much ultimately does God want us to save? How much should we consume each year? How much can we actually give away of God’s money each year and how were we going to start imparting wisdom transfer to our kids so that they can handle any wealth transfer that might occur? After reading this book, everything did in fact “flip”. Instead of the guiding principle being “how much should we give”, it became “how much should we keep”. We just fully came to terms with the fact that any money we have is God’s and we are just being asked to steward it in the manner that brings the most glory to Him. Today we have asked and answered those questions with the help of the wisdom provided in this book, many advisors who have traveled this path before us, and thankfully wisdom from God. As CEO of a 400 person company, this book has also had a great effect on how I run my business. We have started down the road of being a more generous company to our employees, those we serve, and the community and world at large. We are so excited about the road God has planned for our company in the years to come. The seven core principles for Biblical Wealth and Giving found on page 45 are the ones my wife and I believe will guide our actions around wealth and giving for the rest of our time here on earth. We do believe that the world is at a tipping point and that there can be a great acceleration of generosity led by Christians to greatly alleviate the conditions of the poor and to complete the Great Commission. We pray that God and Money will be a highly influential instrument that God will use to help this acceleration. Thank you so much, John and Greg for pouring yourselves into this, and being so transparent with your personal actions that they may serve as a useful guideline to others.

I serve as a development professional with a global ministry. Constantly I am reading books on generosity and what the Bible says about money. Also, as someone who is in his late 30's I understand the importance of developing the next generation of generous givers. So, when a friend shared Greg and John's video testimony I knew I needed to get my hands on this book. Well, the Lord allowed me to do one better, I had the privilege to meet both Greg and John and hear their heart behind the book and what God has taught them as a result of this journey. I walked away from both meetings praising God that both of these men are committed to helping raise up a generation of biblical stewards to impact the Kingdom of God!!!Now, the book... LOVED IT!!! In all honesty, there is nothing in it that I hadn't read before in terms of content, but rather it was the way it was packaged and presented that provided me several "ah ha" moments. Greg and John don't just give you biblical positions on what God says about money, they share their personal journeys as well as interviews with generous business leaders, and then give practical applications in how to start your own journey. I highly recommend this book. In fact, I've started to give it out as a gift to many of the donors I meet with on a regular basis.

This is a very thought-provoking book, whose fundamental premise can be applied to non-Christians as well as Christians. The ideas are grounded in the Bible and an explicitly Christian framework, but the concept of generosity as a spiritual and moral imperative translates well to many of the non-religious debates America is having today about economic inequality. (I should state here that the book is not political, but in reading it I found myself drawing many parallels to my own life and internal debates I have over the role of wealth in society.)"God and Money" is written in a very approachable and conversational style, and that makes it easy to understand and internalize the concepts. I kept pausing to read passages out loud to my family, and am asking them all to read it so we can have a family conversation about it. Most helpful are the exercises that help you identify where you are on the financial spectrum ("saver," "spender," or "servant") and specifically identify your needs and goals (from how much to keep in an "emergency fund" to how big of a house to own.)Most important: this book is *not* preachy or prescriptive! In reading it, I never felt guilt for past choices and never felt like I was being lectured by the authors. "God and Money" lays out guidelines for financial and philanthropic decision-making, but recognizes that everyone has unique personal situations that require a customized approach.Overall, it's a quick and easy read that leads to genuine self-reflection and actionable steps for change.

My five star rating is for the book, not the subject pertaining to it. Neal Gabler has done a masterful job of presenting an incredibly well balanced synopsis of Walt Disney the person. I've read the negative Amazon reviews of this book, just for laughs. They hate the book because it would have caused them to change their opinions of Disney. Obviously they loved the man. Before I read the book I was a victim of the Disney Corporation spin machine that continues to this day to present its creator as the benevolent "Uncle Walt". I believed it. Now I see Disney for what he was. A visionary most certainly. Driving to perfection in whatever he attempted. But he was also a vile and contemptuous dictator in the studio. And something I never realized before, he never drew Mickey Mouse. A former employee of Disney's summed up the man beautifully when he said "Disney's true genius is in taking credit for other people's genius". So appropriate in describing Disney's climb to fame. He stepped over many people to get where he eventually got to. And he never gave those responsible for his fame the credit they so richly deserved.

Gabler's biography of Walt Disney is only for avid readers of history by examining all sides of this famous persons life, and at over 900 pages you have to be dedicated to press on into this well researched but ofttimes sad story.WARNING to die-hard D23 Disney fans... this is not the book you are seeking; because some of the personal struggles and business decisions you don't hear about are carefully described in these pages. The success of this luminary is covered, as are the dark times, the nervous breakdown, the bankruptcy, the anger... and I'll stop there for fear of hurting your feelings by going further into the darkness. Uncle Walt was a genius in every way... including troubled childhood which fueled his driven need to create the "Happiest Place on Earth."If you want to protect the happy Americana image of Walt Disney pick up the wonderfully cheerful biographies written by Bob Thomas or Pat Williams. They offer interesting stories of Walt, teach powerful life-application lessons about perseverance and creativity in a clever way that protects the fairy tale ending, while leaving out the dragons along the way.Hard reading, but explained a lot to me as a life-long resident of Orlando about how one mans driven desire really did change the world.

Having seen the terrific American Experience (PBS) two-parter on Walt Disney's life, I was interested to know more. This biography is very thorough and even handed, not skimming on criticism where it's due. We often forget that Walt Disney was a man before the name came to represent things. What we learn is that Walt Disney came from very little, never made it out of high school, and despite a few amazing successes, struggled to keep his studio alive following movies that failed at the box office. That those same movies are now considered classics that are integral parts of almost every Americans' childhood makes it almost unbelievable that they nearly ran Walt Disney out of the business of animation. All we know is the vast empire that exists today, but it's only because Walt Disney kept pushing forward in his desire to amuse and delight his inner boy in a way that also appealed to the broad need of most of us to have our stunted, immature selves likewise entertained with singing animals and amusement park fantasy lands. Neal Gabler does a great job capturing the boy, the man, the boy-man, and the man-child.Among fascinating personal details are Walt's distant relationship with his father, his somewhat naive idea of women including a marriage that seemed more convenient than passionate, but was faithfully maintained to the end of his life, Walt's warm and cold relationship with his brother and business partner Roy, and the death of his mother, for which he blamed himself.Gabler also touches on accusations often heard about Walt Disney of being a bad boss, a racist, and a Nazi sympathizer. Although he doesn't give Walt a pass, he does make sure to remind readers of the context of the times Disney lived in, and that there were no standards for animation and film workers as movies were just starting to find their feet in the 1920s and 30s.As a film history through one man's life, this book also reminds us that Disney innovated things we take for granted now-- things like sync sound in cartoons, color animation, camera animation stands that allowed depth of field, and storyboards. The world of movie animation would be very different if not for Walt Disney and the talent he fostered in his studio.

Our 13 month old loves this book:* The translation is good. The book is about a series movements from head to toe, each paired with an animal. The first movement is the head, side to side, paired with a penguin. That's 2 nouns and a verb* Reading out loud and showing the baby the movement is fun. She is beginning to imitate the movements. She enjoys books that incorporate movement or sound-making* Large size, easy to read. We love large size books since they are easier to read and to be delighted by the illustrations. The first time, it was a bit difficult to set up flat on a book stand, but now we stand in front of it to read it and move to the book's instructions* Unfortunately, it is not our preferred format (lap-sized boardbook), this version is PAPERBACK. So we are careful. Since the baby loves this book so much, it has a few creases

Seriously, I love him. This book helps teach body parts and animals. Do the actions as you read! My 2y/o thinks I'm crazy, and he mostly only raises his shoulders like the buffalo, but he thinks it's hilarious and makes me read the book a lot.We also have the book in English, and I was very happy to find the book in both languages. My son has both Spanish and American family, and is being raised bilingual. I love that I have books like these that I can read in English and then in Spanish to help me understand the Spanish.

Great for beginning Spanish readers. My son just started in an immersion program and this has been great for him to start helping read along in.

my son loves this book. he loves doing all the things the animals do. however, it is a very big book and it's not a board book. so the pages are very difficult for my toddler to turn. plus we had to actually keep the book away from him for awhile because he wants to tear the pages. only recently he learned to not tear the pages in books, but i still have to supervise him with this book because he can rip the pages accidentally since it's so big and awkward for him to manage. i wish i would have noticed it wasn't a board book when i bought it. that said, my son does love love love having this book read to him.

Kids will love this book, just be prepared as the reader that you will not be able to just sit on the couch and read this book, you will have to get moving! I also love the size of this particular version that I bought (big). / Muy lindo cuento. Incluye muchos movimientos que les va a gustar a los niños. ¡Prepárese para moverse mucho!

A mi hija le gusta mucho!

This is my son's favorite. Interactive book for young kids. Perfect!

I really like the simplicity of this book. It allows me to read simple Spanish, simple concepts to my three year old who has just recently started trying to read it herself. Funny, we are a multi lingual household but are severely lacking in Spanish! This book makes us feel like we can really learn and practice (as a supplement to other ways).
