The author, a former political speech writer for a major Washington persona and political appointee has an undergraduate degree centering on political science and history. He is certainly an able writer, an excellent wordsmith with a smooth easy to follow style. The book comes with a long set of notes and an extensive bibliography. In terms of sheer numbers the notes and sources fill 88 pages. But, too many of these notes and too much of the bibliography is from less than substantial sources, several of which are more notable for revisionist views of history than for serious academic chops. But, perhaps more significant are the omissions. Not found in the works cited are John Gittings landmark study, “The Role of the Chinese Army,” which speaks to the development, leadership, training and discipline of the People’s Liberation Army or James Sheridan’s “China in Disintegration.” Similarly two of the foremost biographers of Mao: Jerome Chen and Frederic Wakeman are missing from the bibliography. That by itself is not necessarily a problem or even a surprise since Kurtz-Phelan has limited experience in East Asia.More concerning; however, is the way, the author takes bits and pieces from the works he cites without providing full context. Thus when he speaks to the murder of Chinese communist officials and sympathizers in Shanghai by the KMT and thugs recruited for the slaughter he fails to mention that Mao’s wife, Yáng Kāihuì, (probably the only woman Mao ever really loved) was executed by a KMT warlord He Jian. Mao later told an American that he mourned Yáng Kāihuì for the rest of his life. That certainly would have colored Mao’s relationship with Chiang Kai-shek and the KMT. It is this sort of detail and its impact that Kurtz-Phelan misses. There are other opportunities for analysis that the author allows to pass. For example, early on he recounts an incident with Winston Churchill. As Kurtz-Phelan recounts Marshall says to Churchill “Not one American soldier is going to die on that ————- beach.” (A reference to the upcoming invasion of Normandy.) The author does not understand why Marshall said that. Marshall said it because of the needless death he saw in the Meuse Argonne, the deadliest battle in American history which saw 26,277 American doughboys killed and another 95,786 wounded. My dad’s oldest brother was killed in the Meuse Argonne which can probably best be described as a morass. Additionally, the fighting that Marshall took part in in the American War in the Philippines in the early 1900s was brutal with atrocities on both sides. Finally, some of the research is a bit questionable. Colonel Dave Barrett headed the Dixie Mission from March 1942 to November 1944. Barrett was a skilled Chinese linguist with long experience in China. Barrett was despised by Ambassador Hurley (Hurley was at best, ill suited for diplomacy) and replaced by Col Ivan Yeaton who had nowhere near the background Barrett had, but deferred to Hurley. Had Kurtz-Phelan understood this his remarks about the Dixie mission would have been less tentative.Another example of Kurtz-Phelan playing a bit circumspectly occurs when he states “... when Yenan requested Soviet Weapons, Moscow instead sent tens of thousands of guns, airplanes, and tanks, along with advisors and pilots ... “ That is well and good, but the Soviets withdrew all those personnel in 1940. What impact that had on Marshall’s mission is questionable. The way the author writes about Soviet support it would be all too easy to assume the Soviets where still supporting Chiang Kai-shek when Marshall arrived in China. Making this assumption abets the revisionist history Kurtz-Phelan puts forward. On a positive note, the book made me consult several books I have on hand and it lead me to review some of the work I did in Asian Studies. That, for me, was a good exercise.

This is an excellent book. Kurtz-Phelan has done a wonderful job researching a part of history that has received very little attention. The book is extremely well-written. I was so enthralled with the book, that I literally missed my subway stop while reading it, a quality reserved only for about .5% of the books I have ever read. I particularly liked Kurtz-Phelan’s use of primary sources to give the perspective of the different players, including—intriguingly—Chiang Kai-Shek’s dairies. The reader comes away understanding the challenges of foreign intervention, the importance of on-the-ground knowledge of a situation, and Marshall’s high personal standards. During a period of many global challenges, Kurtz-Phelan has managed to stay focused on the history itself, letting the reader make his own conclusions about how to apply this to today. Nevertheless, the book provides excellent background to understanding modern China and how the country has arrived to where it is today. The book would be a welcome gift to the professional historian as well as anyone who enjoys reading about the world today and a lot in between.

Highly readable and enlightening examination of a brief yet critical chapter in recent world history and our foreign policy. It's message, among others, of the tension between complexity and hard objective analysis based on facts on the one hand, and our democracy's sometime infatuation with myths and simplicity on the other, hold important lessons for today. Marshall held a keen understanding of when and how to act and when not to; the latter often being far more difficult. Let us also not forget that he and our leadership at the time also well understood the fundamental responsibility the United States has, even if imperfectly exercised at times and with attendant limitations, in supporting the world's democracies.

Daniel Kurtz-Phelan really laid out the China Mission well. George Marshall was a national hero and quickly progressing on the road to mythological national figure that many of us recognize today for his leadership of the army during World War II. China following the war was threatening to spiral out of control because of a brutal civil war between the Communists led by Mao and the Nationalists by Chiang Kai-shek. So the reader gets this dynamic of The Great Conquering Hero vs. The Conflict No One Could Tame within the first few chapters, which really hooks the reader.Given the sheer mistrust, disdain, and outright hatred that Mao and Chiang Ki-shek had for each other, I would suggest that George Marshall is the only figure who had a prayer of bringing anything positive out of this mess. While some authors try to paint one side or the other with virtue, both sides come out more than a little barbaric in Kurtz-Phelan’s telling. Surprisingly, Marshall actually does almost make something positive happen. But circumstances brought Marshall back stateside and a succession of weaker personalities, lacking in Marshall’s respect and prestige entered. They eventually created a China that not even the mythical George Marshall could save. It was very moving and somewhat sad to see defeat snatched from the jaws of potential victory and even our great heroes have their limits.

This book is a must for anyone who works with ggplot2. There are so many excellent graph images, that I often flip through the book when I'm trying to figure out how to create a specific plot, but may not know what it is called.

If you want to create great graphs using 'R' then this is the book you need. There are clear and easy to follow recipes for scatter plots, box plots, line graphs, bar graphs, histograms, function curves, dot plots, frequency polygons, heat maps, dendrograms, and many more - including a selection of 3D graphs. There are chapters on how to enhance your graphs - controlling axes, annotations, legends, etc. Also included is all the information you should need on how to manipulate your data.Basic versions of each type are followed by step by guides on making more sophisticated versions. Using bar graphs as an example, the basic version is followed by instructions on how to group bars, use colours, make a stacked bar graph, adjust bar width and height, and so on.I have had a copy of the first edition for several years so the fact that I've bought the second edition should give you an idea of how highly I rate it. The chapter headings of the 2nd ed are the same as the first and there are about 30 more pages, so the changes are not radical. For me I think it was worth upgrading but I don't know if it would be so for everyone.
