Review

"An eerie, brushstroked evocation . . . A strikingly vivid, even visceral writer, Lloyd Parry sweeps away distractions . . . to offer tightly focused and consuming human stories . . . Lloyd Parry is uncommonly sensitive to all such spirits, and in the tsunami he has found a horrifying metaphor for those subliminal forces that swirl underneath the manicured surfaces of Japan . . . The ghosts that hover just above his charged and elemental pages are a reminder of how much this land of order remains ruled by things that can't be seen." ―Pico Iyer, The New York Times Book Review"A lively and nuanced narrative by the British journalist Richard Lloyd Parry, the longtime and widely respected correspondent in Tokyo for the London Times. Though in part he presents vivid accounts of what was a very complex event, with this book he wisely stands back . . . to consider the essence of the story . . . Heartbreaking." ―Simon Winchester, The New York Review of Books"Powerful . . . Lloyd Parry's account is truly haunting, and remains etched in the brain and heart long after the book is over." ―Lisa Levy, New Republic"Richard Lloyd Parry wrote People Who Eat Darkness, easily one of the best works of true crime in the past decade . . . [Ghosts of the Tsunami is] a stunning portrait of devastation and its aftermath." –Kevin Nguyen, GQ"A wrenching chronicle of a disaster that, six years later, still seems incomprehensible . . . Any writer could compile a laundry list of the horrors that come in the wake of a disaster; Lloyd Parry's book is not that . . . Lloyd Parry writes about the survivors with sensitivity and a rare kind of empathy; he resists the urge to distance himself from the pain in an attempt at emotional self-preservation." –Michael Schaub, NPR.org"Remarkably written and reported . . . a spellbinding book that is well worth contemplating in an era marked by climate change and natural disaster." –Kathleen Rooney, The Chicago Tribune"Vivid, suspenseful . . . [Lloyd Parry] re-creates the tragic events in a cinematic style reminiscent of Truman Capote's In Cold Blood . . . There's a harrowing intimacy here, as he brings us into families senseless with grief, the desire for a justice that eludes them . . . Lloyd Parry's elegant, clear-eyed prose allows him to circle ever closer to the heart of Okawa's mystery . . . Part detective story, part cultural history, part dirge, Ghosts of the Tsunami probes the scars of loss and the persistence of courage in the face of unspeakable disaster." ―Hamilton Cain, Minneapolis Star Tribune"[Lloyd Parry's] writing is always graceful and filled with compassion." ―Adam Hochschild, The American Scholar"[The book’s] testimonies are almost unbearably moving . . . In an understated way, Ghosts of the Tsunami is not only a vivid, heartfelt description of the disaster, but a subtle portrait of the Japanese nation." ―Craig Brown, The Mail on Sunday“The stories that Lloyd Parry gives voice to are not only deeply personal but . . . accompanied with essential historical and cultural context that enable the reader to understand the roles of death, grief, and responsibility in Japanese culture―and why some survivors may always remain haunted.” ―Amanda Winterroth, Booklist (starred review)“A brilliant, unflinching account . . . Singular and powerfully strange . . . It is hard to imagine a more insightful account of mass grief and its terrible processes. This book is a future classic of disaster journalism, up there with John Hersey’s Hiroshima.” ―Rachel Cooke, The Guardian“Lloyd Parry combines an analytical dissection of the disaster in all its ramifying web of detail with a novelist’s deft touch for characterization . . . Heartrending . . . it will remain as documentation to the inestimable power of nature and the pitiful frailty of our own.” ―Roger Pulvers, The Japan Times "Pensive travels in the wake of one of the world's most devastating recent disasters, the Tohoku earthquake of 2011 . . . The author's narrative is appropriately haunted and haunting . . . A sobering and compelling narrative of calamity." –Kirkus Reviews

Harrowing and heartbreaking, beautifully written without sensationalism or any easy answers to the question "Why?", this book was impossible for me to put down. One classic tale as told to its author by a local priest, of the Buddha himself centuries ago having been verbally unable to explain the Why of death to a young mother grieving her child, is so spare and quietly dignified that I re-read it several times and highlighted the portion where the woman is gently led to come to her own conclusions. As must we all.

This is really two books. The first 2/3 of this book is comprised of spell-binding accounts from survivors and families who lived through this disastrous tsunami. The book focuses on individuals in the small towns of the area, and how after years of routine earthquake and tsunamis, people had become complaisant. They assumed their sea walls would protect them. But the tsunami made short work of those barriers. These coastal towns are surrounded by protective hillsides on the landward side, and the people who survived are the ones who ran (or drove) like hell to get up there. Seconds mattered. People who paused to grab a phone or a precious family memento were swept away. Many were never found, either swept far out to sea or buried deep in the miles of mud that coated the towns when the water returned to the ocean. The final part of the book examines one particularly poignant story: the elementary school in a small town, where the students and teachers perished for lack of a coherent disaster plan, even though earthquakes and tsunamis are common in this area. The school administrators in charge wasted precious time dithering about what to do and then led the children down into the path of the oncoming waters rather than up the hill right behind the school. They all died. This is followed by a heartbreaking coverage of the government's failure to help the people afterwards. Local officials twisted themselves into pretzels to avoid taking any responsibility for these dead children and teachers, fearing not just the monetary penalty but the shame of their own failure. Meanwhile the devastated families (many of whom had lost everything) were living in crappy trailers, unable to make a living of any kind (their businesses were gone). The government did very little to help. They were abandoned by all the authority figures in whom they'd had faith, paid taxes to, elected, and trusted. The only real help they got was from each other. Eventually some of the families brought a suit against the school, if only to bring this shameful story to light, for the sake of all families who trust that their children are being well cared for when they send them off to school every morning. This part of the story is still unfolding. It is sensitively told. We are given the facts of what happened, but also the author includes insights into the attitudes and traditions at work. He has lived for many years in Japan and understands the culture and the people. As an American, I was ashamed of the way the US abandoned the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. It was shocking to me to discover that the same kind of failure can happen in another "First World" country.

Wonderfully descriptive and empathetic, Richard Lloyd Parry brings a lucid, warm writing style to bring to life the pain and horror of the tsunami. His understanding of the juxtaposition of Japan's cultural appreciation of nature and the destruction that it brought is chilling and beautiful. The author places apt criticism in the cultural flaws that added to the death toll, while clearly respecting the best of what the country offers.A wonderfully constructed work.

Excellent examination of the East Japan Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami by focusing on the tragedy of Okawa Elementary School in the Ishinomaki City area. 73 of the 74 school students who died as a,result of the Tsunami were at Okawa. Powerful story! Very enlightening reading about the disaster and about Japanese Society in general. I have a better understanding about Japanese Culture after reading this book.

Powerful, poignant, well-researched and beautifully written. It sheds light on the impact the tsunami had on several of the families in its path, and opens western eyes to the story of Okawa Elementary School and the children lost there. I couldn’t put it down.

Just finished reading this amazing book; couldn’t put it down. Mr. Perry did a brilliant job in respecting the horror that occurred and explaining each account in great detail. These officials need to be in prison especially the principal and Mr. “Mentally challenged” Endo. Nearly an hour to escape and that was a massive failure. These kids were in their care; they should have been kept safe. Horrific negligence! That their stupid pride, denial, fear of public embarrassment, and old ways led to the deaths of the most innocent of all; children. The earth started the tragedy but humans made it worse. They will have to face their maker eventually in atonement! My heart aches for all those affected by this tragedy! I hope that this book gets made into a documentary or actual film by National Geographic, it’s a story that deserves to be told.

I enjoyed the book a lot because it described the experiences of the residents, the community during the earthquake. The children's school where most of the kids who could have been saved by common sense died. So, the principal was on trial but he escaped the judicial system and so with some teachers. The citizens could hear the devastation of the tsunami- while the water flowed it carried building structures, boats, human remains/human body parts and tragically childrens remains/childrens body parts. There was violent crackling, breaking, bursting, etc. Silence was impossible. The book brought me to this tragedy. I'm happy that I purchased this book but very sad with the loss of the kids lives too soon.

#361,782 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

The 52 Omnibus collects 52 #1 to #52, so that's the complete series packed up in one big 1.216 pages book. The weekly series "52" is one of the most interesting and better-accomplished projects of DC Comics from the last decade. With a brain trust of writers consisting of Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, Mark Waid and Greg Rucka the expectations were high and the actual results were even higher than one could have anticipated. The genre of the stories included in 52 range from magic and mystics, to science fiction and cosmic epics, to mystery and crime. This series never bores you and always manages to surprise you. There are a lot of story arcs that eventually interconnect with each other, an a BIG thread that starts and end the series (which of course I won't spoil). This maxiseries picks up literally right after Infinite Crisis. Each issue narrates an entire week of the DC Universe in "real time", so once you put the fifty-two issues together you get a whole year of stories. 52 Omnibus is the perfect companion for the Infinite Crisis Omnibus, as it is its direct sequel. However, 52 is quite a stand-alone series. You don't really need to read Infinite Crisis to understand 52, just by reading the 1-page recap included at the beginning of the book and/or online sum-ups you will be okay to enjoy this Omnibus.* * * * THE CHARACTERS * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *52 features a wide array of characters. These are the main ones:- Booster Gold and Skeets, his robot from the future.- The new Batwoman (the same one from the current New-52 ongoing series), Reneé Montoya (from the Gotham City Police Department) and The Question.- Ralph Dibny (the Elongated Man), still dealing with the aftermath of Identity Crisis.- John Henry Irons (Steel) and her nephew Natasha.- Animal Man, Adam Strange and Starfire, all of them involved together in a terrific space adventure.- Will Magnus, creator of the Metal Men.- Black Adam, in his search for redemption, one of the highest points of 52.- Lex Luthor, amazingly written.- Lobo, in quite a different take from the character. And many, many more characters that I can't list as to not spoil the events. All of these characters are pushed to the very limit, and that's one of the main reasons that make 52 such an outstanding series. You won't miss at all the big players of the DC Universe like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman or Green Lantern (they all play nice small parts anyway!), because the featured cast will win your heart over. Every character has a very carefully planned and developed arc with a clear beginning, middle and ending.* * * * THE ARTISTS * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *Keith Giffen provides the art breakdowns for every issue of the series, assuring a sense of unity in the overall layout of the pages. The pencillers list is large and it includes some very talented artists, such as Joe Bennett, Eddy Barrows and Chris Batista doing most of the bulk of issues and Phil Jimenez, Darick Robertson, Justiniano, Giuseppe Camuncoli among others gracing the pages in other individual issues. The art is overall good and truly great sometimes. You can argue that some issues are not as well illustrated as others, but given the titanic effort it took to accomplish such a complex project, DC did really fine.* * * * ABOUT THE EDITION * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *POSITIVE aspects:+ This is a sewn-binding book, which is vital for such a big edition, as it allows to read it comfortably since it lays flat on the table. The gutter-loss is almost non-existant, so you can fully appreciate the artwork. This looks like a very high quality binding destined to last for a lifetime. And by the way, this sewn-binding is a bit more flexible than the previous Invisibles Omnibus published by DC (though it's still not as flexible as Marvel Omnibuses). It's great to see that DC keep improving in this aspect.+ The paper stock is heavy weight and glossy, you don't see the art through the pages. The printing quality is excellent, with sharp reproductions of the illustrations and vibrant colors.NEGATIVE aspects:- The "World War III" 4-issues mini-series is NOT included. This is a real shame, as these mini-series takes place between issues #49 and #50. The inclusion of WW III would have meant only 96 more pages. This is a 1.216 pages book, while The Invisibles Omnibus was a freaking 1.536 pages long book for exactly the same price, so there's really no excuse for the omission of WW III.- The presentation of the book leaves something lot to be desired: the hardback consists of plain black cardboard with cheap engraving details. This is unacceptable for a 150 dollars edition. I was expecting a proper printed hardback like the one in The Invisibles Omnibus, unfortunately, it was not the case.* * * * EXTRAS * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *Even though this Omnibus packs around 70 pages of extras scattered all over the book (they are placed at the begining of each chapter), the previous 4 volume TPB edition included MUCH MORE extras that were OMITTED in this Omnibus. This edition mostly includes sketches by cover artist J.G. Jones, extracted from the "52: The Covers HC" and interior pages skectches, pencils and inks extracted from the TPB editions. Now, in the TPB edition each one of the 52 issues featured a 1 or 2-pages DVD style commentary section, most of them by Mark Waid and Greg Rucka themselves, as well as some by Dan Didio and other editors (plus more sketches and thumbnails) that are NOT INCLUDED HERE AT ALL. It's a TERRIBLE SHAME, because those were some of the most elaborated extras I've ever seen in these kind of collected editions and gave a unique insight to the series. What really bothers me is that those extras already existed, DC didn't have to take the time or the effort to create them, they just needed to reprint them, simple as that. This Omnibus could have easily had 300 more pages (like the Invisibles Omnibus indeed does) to accommodate the inclusion of both WW III and that massive load of extras, but of course, DC just didn't care for it. Absolutely shameful.SPECIAL NOTE: The original weekly issues of 52 also included a 10-part "History of the DC Universe" by Dan Jurgens & Art Thibert (with a total of 40 pages put together) and a section of 2-pages "Secret Origin" sum-ups of many DC caharacters by top-talent artists. That material is NOT included here, but I don't necessarily think that's a problem. While it's definitely great stuff, it has pretty much nothing to do with the 52 series, so the omission of that material is something that can make sense from an editorial point of view, in my opinion.* * * * CONCLUSION * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *DC puzzles me with this edition: they are certainly taking steps to improve their Omnibus line with an excellent sewn-binding and great paper stock, but they mess it up with a poor presentation and missing material.52 is one the best DC series I've ever read, so if you can get it with a deep discount, I recommend you to buy it. But if the price seems too much, you can always get the 4-volumes TPB edition (plus the World War III stand-alone TPB) for a more affordable price (and with the advantage of getting those precious extras). I previously owned those TPBs and they are a nice edition indeed, but I sold them as soon as I heard of this Omnibus. Don't get me wrong, I'm quite happy having 52 in this format, because I love Omnibuses and the series deserved this deluxe tratment, but now part of me regrets giving up those TPB full of extras goodies. So my final conclusion is this: read 52, no matter what format, because it's an excellent series. Each edition has its pros and its cons: if you want a deluxe edition to show off in your shelf, with a higher paper stock and printing quality, oversized art and great binding, go for the Omnibus. However if you want a more affordable edition, confortable to read anywhere, and a load of DVD-style extras, go for the TPBs.

As excited as i was to read this collection, I was very quickly disappointed at what I received. TWICE, I have ordered this book and both times the pages have been directly ripped off from the binding of the book. It's clear that the material is weak at best. Instead, I will be buying the 4 individual graphic novels & I suggest the same for anyone else.

Great Book! Read it over a weekend and it was so fun.Expect to meet some great new characters if you are not so familiar with the DC universe other than the main three.I purchased for $58.91 in July 2017, which I feel is great for a 1,216 page book.Additional Note: Do not expect Amazon to deliver your Omnibuses to you in 100% perfect condition, you will be disappointed. I have ordered 4, and although they are nicely plastic wrapped and come with some air cushions, the sides tend to get bent and the covers will be slightly damaged (especially near the corners). I guess that you get what you pay for.Additional Note 2: expect to look up a Youtube video on how to open one of these books if you have not learned before. Kind of lame, but I think it will help in the long run.

Great Collection for full 52 run. Does not include WW3 arc, but that's ok, as it's mainly noise in my opinion. My copy was in pristine collection, no problems with spine.

When the 52 series originally ran from May of 2006 to May of 2007, it was an unprecedented undertaking by the company to release an event title on a weekly basis in real time. Another factor that sets this apart from other titles is that it is the result of collaboration between four authors, often considered the best in DC's roster. This hefty book collects all 52 issues together, and most if not all the issues are 20 pages in length. While this alone ought to seem filling, those who read the books back during their original run may be somewhat disappointed with the lack of extras here in this omnibus. Many of the original books came with short biography sections at the end where the reader was given a brief rundown of the history of the universe's lesser known characters. Here you will almost only get the story itself, with the extras being a short intro by Paul Levitz and production sketches laced throughout. The series itself is an action-packed run with a dynamite ending; the editing out is just something you experienced readers may wish to know about in advance. One of the objectives in launching this project was to give the audience a look at the DC universe without its biggest three names to lead the charge. This year with Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman stepping down and the B- and C-listers stepping up to fill the void is a compelling drama. It is well worth the price of the book and the time it will take to wade through it.

I am in Nerd Heaven!!!!!!!!! It feels like a brick but the pictures and paper they're printed on are amazing in every way. <3 <3 <3

love this comic series and it came in impeccable condition will be going with my collection very nicely

Love the story, but just like my comment with the Countdown Omnibus...it's just a little unwieldy to hold and read. Not that this will stop me from enjoying all the other DC Omnibus' in the future!

I want to be retrained as a dental assistant with the course starting in October, 2013. I wanted to review a few topics before I started. So I decided to order this workbook. When I received it, I opened the shrink wrap only to learn that there was no answer key to the questions. I do not have the textbook and I have no plans to buy it. It states in the front of the book that the instructor has the answers to the questions in the instructor's edition. This should be stated in the description so that one will know, before purchasing it, that you also need the textbook. I cannot afford the textbook. I am debating whether I will return it as I opened the shrink wrap already. I was hoping that this book would have been a useful tool in reviewing and studying before I started my coursework. A disappointment to say the least.

Great easy to follow promoting effective learning

my school did not require this workbook for the Dental Assisting Program, but I had heard from another student who actually purchased this by mistake what a great tool it is. modern dental assisting is a text book that I am using in multiple classes, so this workbook has been a great asset for all of those exams. the price has gone up since I purchased it, so shop around, but it's worth every penny if you want to do well!

It was exactly as described. Received on time too. Thanks

Very nice book and way cheaper to buy off here ! Was in very good shape and got me threw my class , thank u

The book was new just as advertised. It arrived quickly and in perfect condition. Using the book helps to review the things we learned in class at home.

Excellent book for my studies. No issues so far with my coursework and studies after using this book.A definite asset for any student.

This is a great book for those of you who have to teach physics in an environment with little if any lab and teaching demo equipment and a limited budget.

Bought a lot of Physics books....this one is good, especially for sparking new lab ideas.

When I saw the title of the book, I thought it would be a good aid for me in my highschool physics teachings. Some of the demos are not explained in detail, and it is hard to find (at least for me)some materials that are listed by the author for the demo. However, the ideas have been serving as the starting points for me, after some modifications (and spending a few minutes to understand the setting) I could use them in my class. Alright, it is not a tough job, even may be helpfull, but be aware of the fact that you might find some demos hard to implement.

This is definetely the best Ehrlich book I've read. The demos are great because he puts alot of thought into making them classroom friendly (there's alot using overhead projectors)and detailed. Most of the details should only be used with high school level and up, but most of the experiments are good anyways. He uses sound, detailed physics - not the vague or sometimes incorrect explanations you find in the lower budget books. There's also a great organization scheme that makes everything easy to find and indicates which experiments are appropriate for certain situations.

If you buy this book because you are seeking some design patterns, this book has that, but it doesn't treat it as the primary topic throughout the book and it seems to only remember to discuss it a little bit in each chapter or two. Rather, this book encompasses more than just Node.js design patterns and covers topics involving callbacks, Promises, generators, isomorphic JavaScript, React, modules, ECMAScript 2015, streams, architecture, and much more. All of the topics are important, no doubt, but should all of those topics go into a book that uses "Design Patterns" as its title? I think not, and so I took away a star. Either re-word the title of the book or remove the chapters that are more along the lines of general topics in Node.js / JavaScript and perhaps place those in their own book. Don't get me wrong. I read all chapters of the book and from each chapter, I learned something, so I don't consider the book to be uninformative. However, I think that the title of a technical book should reflect what it primarily discusses within. Maybe other reviewers will disagree and say that I'm being too picky, but if wanted to read about isomorphic JavaScript or React, I would buy a book on those subjects and not have the money paid for a "design patterns" book to cover them regardless of how well-intentioned the authors may have treated the subject. Having said all of that, if you are a serious Node.js developer, this is a well done book overall regardless of the title and I would recommend it to you.

I just finished reading through this book. It feels like it doesn't take full advantage of the ES6 as it could, but nonetheless it was still an effective and enjoyable read. The patterns described are detailed in a thorough, intuitive manner which makes it easy for the reader to retain and understand. The only minor gripe I have about this book is the lack of editing. There are a handful of grammar, spelling, and code syntax mistakes that although not difficult to mentally correct, do take you out of "the flow." Hopefully the publisher gets enough errata submissions to publish a more polished version. That being said, it is definitely not a reason to skip this book. If you are a Node developer, the information and ideas presented in this book are invaluable. Give it a go!

In the day and age when most technology books seem to be written in a month by compiling information freely available on the web, it is refreshing to find a book that was written by someone who clearly not only knows what he's talking about extremely well, but also knows how to present the material in a coherent way.I am not going to describe the content of the book, as you can easily get that from a TOC, but I will say this:1. If you are an experienced developer that is new to Node.js and need to get up to speed quickly, read this book2. If you are interested in asynchronous programming patterns and practices, read this book3. If you are writing a JavaScript library that needs to work both in Node and in the browser, read this book4. If you are interested in messaging and integration patterns, read this book5. If you simply want to read an awesome technical book for a change, read this bookThe bottom line -- if you are doing anything with Node, this book should be on your shelf/iPad/Kindle.

This book came very highly recommended to me by all the best Node developers I know. After reading it I must concur. This is the book you want to help take your Node skills to the next level. I've read most of the serious Node books on the market, and this one is the best I've read.

skills to the next level. I was at an intermediate level not sure where to go next and this was the answer! I think (no offense) that whoever said that this is not as design pattern specific as the name implies does not actually understand what the term design patterns really means or must have a different definition for it that I don't know of. I completely disagree with you. In almost every chapter there is a design pattern being discussed. I can't get tired of reading this book! I would highly recommend it.

I would think of myself an intermediate developer on client side JavaScript and newbie on the server side. This book was exactly what I needed. It's well structured, informative, and saved me hours of going through blogposts and gather fragmented information without full context.I'm several chapters in and I'm really liking it.

Read this and you'll get serious and deep understanding of node.js, and specific ways to implement in your project.Great discussion and solutions to avoid the sync vs async design and implementation issues in node. This is the most advanced complete and useful node.js book I've read.I enjoy it very much, and keep coming back to it to help me design and code.Thank you Mario for all the times you didn't go out for beers with your friends so you could publish your bookKudos to Packt and the reviewers. Great job, Great Book!

I've read basically every Node.js book published on Kindle, and this is the best by far. Even months after reading all the way through this text, I still learn new things each time I browse through its chapters. From a deep-dive into the mechanics of async control flow (promises, streams, etc) to best practices application structure/packaging to architectural strategies for scaling and deploying Node.js apps of all kinds, it's got everything you need to take your Node.js (and JS in general) skills to the next level.
