About the Author

James Herriot (1916-1995) was the bestselling author of memoirs including All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All, and Every Living Thing. At age 23, Herriot qualified for veterinary practice with the Glasgow Veterinary College, and moved to the town of Thirsk in Yorkshire to work in a rural practice. He would live in, work in, and write about the region for the rest of his life. Though he dreamed for years of writing a book, his veterinary work and his family kept him busy, and he did not start writing until the age of 50. In 1979, he was awarded the title Order of the British Empire (OBE). His veterinary practice in Yorkshire, England, is now tended by his son, Jim Wight.

This was one of my favorite books growing up dog-crazy, so revisiting these stories, still dog-crazy, felt like reunions with old friends. As a pre-veterinary student, I also appreciate the anecdotal history of veterinary medicine before antibiotics. The science has come a long way, but the humanity behind the science has not; as a result, these stories will never grow old.(Note: these stories are pulled from Herriot's wonderful "All Creatures Great And Small" series, so if you enjoy these, I highly recommend the series.)

And join James Herriott on his rounds in this special collection of stories drawn from his amazing memoirs that begin with All Things Bright & Beautiful. Of all the animals he's treated, dogs have a special place in his heart and it is lovely to read these vignettes (some with updates at the end), familiar or no, as we tromp through fields and up stair cases or sit in drawing rooms along side his patients and their owners.

You cannot go wrong with James Herriot. He is a master story-teller. If you love dogs, you will love this book. And they put a corgi on the cover. So it is a win win.

The book is up to Herriot's skill level that made him a world class author for many years. It is a collection of short stories as are most of his works that I am familiar with. Heriot's career as a veterinarian was at a time when the work was transitioning from large animals to small animals. And, he was particularly fond of dogs. Highly recommended for animal lovers.

I've always enjoyed reading the Herriot stories, so I purchased this one for my daughter who loves dogs. We take turns reading the adventures of Tricky Woo aloud!

James Herriot writes wonderful stories about animals. They are suitable for both children and adults. The reading may be a little difficult for younger readers. Not because the words are hard, but because the phrasing or terminology may require some explanation ( he is British ). All the books are wonderful so pick any one. The whole family will love them

I wasn't sure what to expect from Melissa Radke's first book. Sure, I figured there would be some laughs. Melissa's videos led me to expect that. I also thought there'd be a healthy dose of encouragement. And, of course, she'd talk about Jesus. But what surprised me was the range of reactions elicited by her words. I laughed, cried, nodded my head and said, "Preach," identified with her on multiple levels, and had several moments of self-examination and introspection. This isn't your typical "Christian woman's book." Melissa is unflinchingly honest and candid about her life and her experiences. It seems many popular female Christian authors come off as untouchable, almost perfect. Melissa doesn't even pretend to try to fool us into buying that. She is refreshingly honest, sometimes irreverently so, but that just serves to make you love her more. This is no feel-good, platitude-filled, "Love Jesus and you'll live your best life" book. But she reminds us of our worth, that we were created for abundant life and that it won't just fall into our laps, that we have some heart work to do. And she makes it seem not impossible. She talks to us as if we've always been friends. You'll want to reread it so you don't miss out on her nuggets of wisdom (and to relive some of her funnier moments).

Each one of the 24 chapters of Eat Cake. Be Brave. brings a message of humor, hope and healing that will resonate with every reader. In fact, HOPE is the common thread running throughout the entire book. The way in which Melissa has overcome adversity and used it for good is evident on every page. This perspective has inspired me to look at my circumstances differently, and to believe that hard times don't have to define me. Melissa has a way with words that encourages me to live bravely and to not shy away from things out of my comfort zone. I have laughed, cried, and laughed and cried again reading ECBB! This is a must-read for everyone!

I had high hopes for this book but it was disappointing because I was expecting more of a self-help style book but it was a memoir with chapters of the author's life in random order. Melissa Radke is very funny, and has been able to keep her sense of humor through a lot of difficult times, so if you want to read the book for a laugh and to get to know more about her, than you might really enjoy this book. The "advice" in the book could be stated as "Be brave because God made you perfect the way you are". Otherwise, the content was largely the author confessing all the embarrassing things she's done, and partly an indirect promo for what a great singer she is in hopes that a record label signs her. It was much more about her past than steps she took to be more brave after she turned 41, which what I anticipated from the marketing of the book. There were about 3 chapters out of 24 that were helpful. Again, there are funny parts, but not the mid-life inspiration that it's marketed as.

I'm an avid reader and usually finish 1 book per week. However, I instantly fell in love with Melissa's style of writing and felt like she and I were old friends just sitting down for a talk...so I read the book in one evening because I couldn't find a place to stop! Her style is honest. As a woman in my 40's, I can relate to her stories and appreciate the candor with which she discusses some of the obstacles she's faced in her past and those she continues to face at this stage in her life. I found myself laughing out loud in one instance and then crying in the next because her situations matched so many of mine. The advice she gives is "in your face" and she's 100 real. I need her to move to my town and be my new BFF. My only wish is that I would have read this 20 years ago and been able to learn from her lessons then!

I knew I would like this book... because it was real and relatable like Melissa. There were stories I read aloud to my husband and others I wanted to share with my closest friends because I knew they would say Yes! Me too! But then I found out more about her and really wanted to read more! We share a lot of similarities and life experiences and I felt even more connected. I just wanted the book to keep gong! Thank you for a great book and for sharing your heart!

Melissa Radke has knocked it out of the ballpark with her first book. She is so open and candid about her journey to the point in her life when she made the decision to be brave! This book will take you through her real life experiences and so many of them I could relate to! I laughed, sometimes out loud, as she used her wonderful sense of humor to make her point and then then next chapter I was in tears as I felt the pain of her heartbreak and in some instances had been there, done that myself! I walked through her journey and came out on the other side with the new affirmation and determination that I, too, will start to live brave and not hide behind the way others have made me feel through the years. I will live for the One who knew me before I was even formed and I will live blessed beyond measure!!! This is a MUST READ for anyone! Young women just getting out of high school and heading into real life need to read to help them not fall into the trap others sometimes place you in. Older women need to read this to possibly free them from the chains that have bound them for so long because of what someone may have said about them. All women will come away from this changed in some way that is for sure!!! I'm anxious to see what Melissa will write for her next book because this one is going to be hard to beat!
