I'm torn on this book. While the content is still somewhat applicable to the current version of access, this book is very dated with extremely old screenshots and process flows.Still a good read, but not for someone who is just starting with access because you will have a hard time applying what you are reading.

O'Reilly has a series entitled "The Missing Manual" of books. This could rightfully be the "Missing Supplemental Guide" for Access, for this book opens up a lot of the lesser known tricks that are not covered in the standard text but are part of the problems database managers face all the time. Getz, et al take us beyond instruction into actual working code, and explains the idea behind it. The examples are practical - I've put a number of them to work in daily business already. And with the accompanying CD, you can see these functions in action through live database examples. The help in the book is not overly technical so only an Access Guru can follow and replicate it. It's written for people who work with Access and are comfortable with it but want to take things to the next level. The book is organized into thematic chapters so you can delve into what you want or need to know and get the full range. My copy is covered with post-it flags for different examples I want to refer to again and again. It is not often that a book can fill the void in instruction, but Getz and the Access Cookbook had done just that. User friendly, practical, and understandable make this book a permanent resident on the shelf only an arms length away.

When I started my job, my first assignment was develop several Access databases. What they wanted was beyond what I knew of Access. After buying this book and Access Database Programming and Design, I was well on my way to develop a quite advanced Access database application. I would ask myself, "I wonder if I can..." After consulting this book for the anwser, BAM! I found it there. This book covers everything from simple VBA to advanced techniques such as incorporating a email system into a database, linked dropdown combo boxes using SQL, and creating VB Form control that tells you who all is currently in a database using ADO and VBA! I would say anyone wanting to cook a mean Access database should definitely pick this one up. It is an invaluable reference if you want to develop professional Access databases with incredible functionality!

This is a most helpful book. It solves common problems without having to reinvent the wheels. Besides, after all the years I have forgotten many of the ins and outs that I used to know that would make it easy for me to do my own design and programming. Getz did it for me.

I have been reading Access books for months now and this one hits the sweet spot that I needed. I consider myself knowledgeable in the basics of Access, but have been wanting to incorporate code to make my databases more user-friendly. I'm a network administrator, not a full-time DBA or programmer. Other books that I have read were either too basic, too theoretical, or too technical for me. This book gives dozens and dozens of practical problems that can be addressed with code along with well-written solutions and sample code that you can import and use in your databases. Thanks for a great resource!

- Practical- Pragmatic- Full of tricks- Easy to read and understand- Covers SQL Server and Office Automation as well- The skills grasped here can be applied to any programming platform.- Reasonable lengthThis book helped me too much when I was Access Programmer as well as when I shifted to .Net (Always with Ken Getz and Andy Baron)

I am enjoying reading it. I am not sure I like it in the Kindle format. it kind of inhibits notes and references.

A real world, practical book. Examples of every Access headache I have had to program around. Well documented and fun to read. Best Access book I have bought. I would also recommend Access 97 Expert Solutions for the same reasons. Any book by Getz is usually good.

The book fell apert as I read the pages the very first time. Stories are good, but had to throw away the book after first read.

I bought this book as I was teaching tall tales to my class and they are huge fans of graphic novels! However, after 1 student read it, the entire binding glue came undone and most of the pages fell out. The stories are great the book just isn't held together well - disappointed for the price!

Grandson especially loves how colorful the book is and how colorful pages are.

Reason for Reading: I love folklore and I love the Graphic Spin series put out by Capstone Press. This is an omnibus collection of four previously published single volumes in the series, gathered together in this affordable trade paperback edition. An attractive, sturdily bound volume, this will make the perfect purchase for the home while the individual volumes are more suited to libraries and classrooms. I enjoyed all the stories and really have never been disappointed with anything from this line. Capstone uses top quality authors and industry experienced artists. Recommended for those who enjoy the genre. The following describes each book included as I read it, which were originally published as separate volumes in 2010:1. The Tall Tale of Paul Bunyan by Martin Powell. art by Aaron Blecha. General retelling of the usual stories associated with Bunyan and Babe: the making of the 10,000 lakes, Lake Superior, the Grand Canyon, his fight with Old Man Winter, etc. Starts off with a cute scenario of what his childhood and parents must have been like. A good, fun introduction to the folk hero. The artwork is splendid in a fun, modern comic style with a bit of the grossness factor added. A delightful addition to any collection. 4/52. Pecos Bill, Colossal Cowboy by Sean Tulien. art by Lisa Weber. Honestly this is not a folktale I'm very familiar with. Of course, I've heard of Pecos Bill but the tale was not that familiar to me at all. I found it quite silly actually, more so than other tall tales and this may be because it is believed that Pecos Bill is a modern invention rather than a true folk hero. Apparently Pecos Bill created the Grand Canyon also. However, the story was great fun and I love Lisa K. Weber's art. She is also found quite often in the Graphic Classics series. Another fun story. 3/53. John Henry, Hammerin' Hero by Stephanie Peters. art by Nelson Evergreen. Wonderful retelling of the John Henry story which is based on some truth with a lot of legend mixed in. I really enjoyed this one and so far find it the best one in the collection. The author is on staff with the publisher and I've enjoyed some of her other books; the illustrator is new to me and has a wonderful style which really captures the African-American experience of this tale without actually making much of a deal about the man's race, except for the slavery/freedom issue. A more realistic tall tale since John Henry was only a larger than normal man, not a giant or super-powered like the previous two in the collection. The final two pages present a newspaper format historical overview separating fact from fiction and giving details on where one can visit to see memorials to this folk hero. 5/54. The Legend of Johnny Appleseed by Martin Powell. art by Michelle Lamoreaux. Another fun folk tale with art that is slightly manga-esque. A good story that starts off with the tale of the real John Chapman before venturing off onto the tall tales that grew surrounding him, thus making him a folk hero. Manages to cover all the popular tales of Johnny from his walking across a rainbow to helping the giant catfish. The tale ends with a timeline of the real John Chapman's life. A good ending to the collection with a familiar tale. 4/5

Four American folktales come alive in this collection of comics from award-winning creators Aaron Blecha, Martin Powell, Lisa K. Weber, Sean Tulien, Nelson Evergreen, Stephanie True Peters, and Michelle Lemoreaux. Tall includes the following stories: Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill, John Henry, and Johnny Appleseed.Tall: Great American Folktales is a comic anthology retelling the story of these four legends. Each tale is 34 pages in length with illustrations that are often as tall and colorful as the tale.-------------------------------------------------------------------The Tall Tale of Paul BunyanRetold by Martin Powell with art by Aaron Blecha, Paul Bunyan is an American legend like no other. Paul and his companion Babe, a blue ox, stomped through Minnesota, leaving behind the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes and through Tennessee where Paul created The Smoky Mountains. Legend has it that Paul and Babe loved to wrestle and would do so for days at a time. It was during one of these playtimes that Paul and Babe made the Grand Canyon. Paul then defeated Old Man Winter, whose tears are now Lake Superior. No one knows where the two went to after that. When I was a kid, I saw them in Indiana and a few years later in Michigan.Pecos Bill Colossal CowboyRetold by Sean Tulien with Lisa Weber illustrating, Pecos Bill was a star of the Old West and the best cowboy anyone had ever seen or ever will. He showed all the other cowboys how to rustle cattle with a lasso he invented and introduced the branding iron as a way of knowing which cattle belonged to which cowboy. With his side-kick Widow Maker, Pecos Bill lassoed a monster twister and squeezed it so tight it cried itself dry, forming The Rio Grande. Once, Bill shot out all the stars, except for the largest and shiniest, now known as The Lone Star.John Henry: Hammerin' HeroRetold by Stephanie Peters and artist Nelson Evergreen, John Henry was a tall man with iron muscles and a heart made out of gold. Born with an iron hammer in his hand, John set off to make my mark on the world shortly after the North won the civil war freeing the slaves. John found work on the railroad laying track. John could hammer a steel rod into the ground with one strike, and he was fast. A fancy steam-powered drill salesman heard stories of John saving fellow workers from cave-ins and other heroic feats. He challenged John to a race, saying his machine could out drill any man. Big Ben Mountain was the site of the contest between man and machine. John won but paid a heavy price for his victory. The Legend of Johnny AppleseedRetold by Martin Powell and illustrated by Michelle Lamoreaux, John Chapman was born in Leominster, Massachusetts. His life goal was to plant apple seeds throughout the country so no one went hungry. Johnny and his companion Brother Wolfe walked around the country planting his seeds and making friends everywhere they went. Johnny Appleseed became a living legend. All sorts of stories about Johnny Appleseed have been told, some true, some not so true. Some say he played with grizzly bears, wrestle three at once. Others say he tamed a giant catfish that was causing shipwrecks. Still others say Johnny Appleseed walked on a rainbow, planting apple seeds along the way.-----------------------------------------------------------------Tall tales are about characters that are bigger than real life, though sometimes based on a real person or a composite of two or more people. The stories are unbelievable but told like the real thing. Johnny Appleseed was a real man who did walk the country planting apple trees. He traveled from Illinois to Pennsylvania, and down to Kentucky. In addition to apples, Johnny planted herbs used in medicines. Born in 1775, John Chapman lived to be age 70.John Henry was also a real man and he did work the railroad. He was a powerful man and he was a strong man. John drove spikes into rock, just as the legend claims. No one knows if he raced against a machine, but there is a monument to John Henry at one opening of the railroad tracks tunneling through Big Bend Mountain. Born in the 1850's, John Henry was a slave until freed at the end of the Civil War.Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill are the two who have no traces of humanity. Both began as characters in a story and grew from there. Paul Bunyan became a character in an advertising campaign for a logging company. Pecos Bill started out in a magazine, went into a book and later comics. Still, I remember Paul and Babe from my childhood. We visited the two first in Indiana and then in Michigan. He was tall and powerful. I will never forget standing on Paul's gigantic black boot. His story is engaging, often funny, definitely "tall," and the one I enjoyed the most.In Tall: Great American Folktales the illustrations of Paul Bunyan are on the cartoonish side, but I really like them. He was a big man with gentle features and his foes did not look scary. The story was great and the comics were wonderful. Pecos Bill also has the cartoon look Paul Bunyan has, just not as extreme. The frames of Pecos Bill the Coyote are hilarious. This is the next best story of the four. The illustrations of John Henry are less cartoonish than Paul Bunyan and Pesos Bill. They depict him as a tall, powerful man yet gentle.Johnny Appleseed looks like an anime. He has the Japanese cartoon look and I see him as weak and out of place, not at all like a TALL legend but more like a fairy tale. The story of Johnny Appleseed walking from place to place on a rainbow pretty much cinched that for me. I thought the portrayal of Johnny Appleseed would be closer to the true man, like those of John Henry. All four of these tales are engaging, often humorous and unbelievable just as tall tales should be. If you like comics, way-out fiction, and fun reads, Tall: Great American Folktales will tickle you. As a colorful introduction to folklore for the middle grades, I think it is a winner.Note: received the eBook from net galley, courtesy of publisher, Capstone.

Tall: Great American Folktales (Graphic Spin) is a wonderful retelling of the tall tales of my youth. Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill, John Henry, and Johnny Appleseed each take on their bigger than life roles in more ways that I could recall from my youth. The fun retelling of these stories is not just for kids, but for all of us that have grew up with these characters as part of our childhood. Each of the four stories has it's roots in the stories we grew up with, but then they are expanded beyond the historic tales passed down to us from our parents and grandparents through story and song. Paul Bunyan is given credit for creating the Golden Plains of Kansas, the Grand Canyon, the greatest of the Great Lakes, the Smoky Mountains, and the bayous of the American South, and the Land of 10,000 Lakes (hey, I remember that one).Take a trip down memory lane - and share that journey with the children of today. Remember the fantasy that became the folk lore of a previous generation and don't let it get lost in this one. Tall is a wonderful way to carry on those stories.

A lot of things to learn from perfectionism of the most famous brands!

Easy to read and quite illustrative. A real good read. The author know what he is talking about. Must for people in the luxury business.

Very interesring new aproach abou the Luxury sector

Of all the books that exist on this subject, this is one of the few insightful and well written texts with unique interviews and good depth of analysis. So far, the 'must-reads' in this field have been Kapferer & Bastien's 'the Luxury Strategy' and HAUTeLUXE.net's 12 steps[...]and Meta-Luxury should be added to the list. Of course if you read French, add ex-Hermes' Director, Christian Blanckaert's "Luxe". Most surprisingly is that Rebecca Robins, co-author of Meta-Luxury is a top dog at Interbrand that tends to rank luxury brands on popularity instead of reputation and excellence, but we see that they do indeed understand the fundamentals of authentic luxury and like many in the field, also share a dislike for the abused word, Luxury. Meta-Luxury is a good new description to match Haut Luxe in French and the authors support the term very well with their four pillars of luxury and especially their term, "the Culture of Excellence". They explain well the differences between the business-driven mass Luxury Brands and the unique achievement-driven Meta-Luxury marques. My slight disappointment was the overemphasis on craftsmanship relative to creativity, the artisan versus the artist/artisan. Vision is critical in this field but the interview with Pagani covers this quite nicely. My major disappointment was that by the time I had reached page 70, the entire chunk of pp 23 to 42 dropped out of the book and now I'll have to glue them back in again! Incredible! If you cant wait for the paperback, get this book anyway. Its the content that counts. My sincere thanks to the authors.

Manfredi Ricca and Rebecca Robins' book, Meta-luxury: Brands and the Culture of Excellence, is as beautiful as it is well-written. The authors use the term "meta-luxury" to define those brands that "escape the cliches of so-called luxury" and exist a world of "luxury beyond luxury." The book is chock full of insights from business leaders, creative geniuses, and academics. As such, it is a tremendous value add for any business leader who is creating or managing a luxury brand in today's fast-moving global marketplace.

Review

"Without giving up the requisite attention to the details of the text, the volumes draw upon the rich theological traditions of the past and attend to the continuing theological issues and perplexities of the present." Patrick D. Miller, Emeritus, Princeton Theological Seminary"The interface between biblical texts and constructive theology is never easy or obvious. This welcome series holds great promise for a new engagement at that interface." Walter Brueggemann, Emeritus, Columbia Theological Seminary

This is the second volume of the Belief series I have purchased, and both times I have been greatly pleased with the outcomes. Gonzalez's work here is all at once brilliant, academically rigorous, relevant, and readily accessible. As an academic who believes what he does should be accessible to all, I greatly appreciate Gonzalez's apparent commitment to the same ideal. You will not find in this commentary an effort to break down the Greek Luke uses, or to devote pages upon pages to the subject of whether Luke really wrote it. Those things are important, and they do get addressed in brief, but this particular text is clearly the work of someone who has done his homework, can defend his positions in the academic realm if necessary, but does not wish to scare away the laity with multiple chapters on trivial subjects which do not interest them.At every turn, Gonzalez offers fresh insight into the world of Jesus, the intentions of Luke, and the relevance of these things to the world in which we live. Much like the Jesus he describes, Gonzalez pulls no punches in challenging the faulty presuppositions of the dominant culture, but does so in such a way that said culture needn't feel alienated by his words.I strongly recommend this text for anyone who wants to learn more about the Gospel of Luke. I also strongly recommend it for those who have no such desire, as once they start reading the book, I have little doubt that the desire would follow.

The dilemma in New Testament theology today is one of influence. In a post-modern world a literary-critical approach has the tendency to get bogged down in words and socio-historical factors without applying the intention of the story to the context. It is therefore exciting to have a theological commentary enter the arena, because it not only deals with words and phrases and the socio-political context but also addresses current issues with the background of the most recent textual discoveries in mind.Justo Gonzalez's Christian history (Vol I & II) was well narrated, in my opinion, and this eloquent style works well in his commentary on Luke. I certainly enjoy the concept of reversal and the author's unique considerations as to why Luke arranged the material as it is today. I haven't completed the book and am working through it with the Revised Common Lectionary (Year C), but it has proven most useful up to now.

Nice review of Luke. I used this as a supplemental study guide and found a lot of extra material that added to our Bible study. Maybe a bit lengthy and detailed if used as the sole book for bible study groups.

This commentary hits all the major interpretive and theological highlights, and in a compelling fashion. It doesn't bog down the audience with anything trifling. Excellent commentary if one is responsible for leading a group through Luke.

Excellent different slant at reading and interpreting Luke.

I purchased this book for Luke sermon series preparation. I found that this commentary includes lots of great insights as well as solid data & information. I strongly recommend this book especially for those who lead the Bible study or preach the sermon!

Justo Gonzalez' passion for justice can be felt on almost every page!

Today I review the second in the new Belief series published by Westminster John Knox Press. Luke: (Belief: A Theological Commentary) is written by Justo L. González.Again, I give my deepest thanks to WJK for giving me the opportunity to participate in reviewing this extraordinary series. If Plachter's book on Mark was excellent, this second offering by González, meets that standard in every way. While Plachter perhaps placed more emphasis on the exegetical-historical aspects of the gospel, González focuses a bit more on the theological implications of Luke to our world today. In the end, this seemed most right to me. Quoting Gustaf Wingren:All good interpretation of the Bible is contemporary. If it were not so, it would not be good. . . .The Bible is not on a par with the subsequent interpretation; it is above it, as the text is antecedent to the commentary. And the interpretation is always an interpretation for the time in which it is written or spoken. There is also a distinctive flavor of liberation theology which permeates the text. This also seems logical to me, since any fair reading of Luke renders the conclusion that Luke portraits a Christ who favored the poor and the marginalized as the true inheritors of the Kingdom of God.Paramount in González's theology of Luke is that the evangelist emphasized above all that Jesus' teaching was one of the "great reversal." His teachings were indeed revolutionary to his world. His was a world of power held by Rome, of patriarchy, of Temple priests and church hierarchy. His teachings again and again told of the coming Kingdom where none of this would be so.The poor, the marginalized, the unclean, the unwanted, the unworthy, the sinners, the children, the women--all these would find a new world in God's Kingdom, one in which those who were served would serve, those first would be last, those most religious and pious would often find themselves judged less than the most simple of the country folk of Galilee, that most marginal of lands. In fact, Mr. González suggests that if one were to remove all the "reversal" stories from the text, there would be few pages left.Perhaps the most stunning theological commentary comes with González's explanation of the Paralytic. He shows how Luke weaves a story of how the teachers and scribes, the Pharisees sat around listening to the teachings of Jesus. The friends of the lame man could not get through the crowd of the listeners to reach the Healer. The end up opening the roof to lower the man to Jesus inside.González reflects on these "circles" about Christ that we as church construct. We sit as pious listeners before the Word. We block the way for those who come in need of healing and comfort."Today, just like then, there are lame people who cannot reach Jesus, because access is blocked by the numerous and tight circles, circles of religious leaders and wise and profound theologians, circles of ecclesiastical, academic, and social structures. . ."He points out that these people are not necessarily bad, but in their zeal to be at the forefront, they (we) block the way of others. We are cautioned to open the doors to those who are marginalized outside the circle. These are the people Jesus most came to help.Of special importance to me, are the continued references to Jesus' table hospitality. Too many of our churches set themselves up as arbiters of who is invited to the table of Christ. Any fair reading of Luke, suggests this is a grave error.Time and time again, as González points out, Jesus welcomed the sinner to the table, and did not require any repentance as a condition to the invitation. He teaches that we should be inviting those who cannot repay our offer, instead of those who will extend a return invitation to ourselves.González powerfully reminds us that:"All too often Christians have claimed control of the Table as if it were ours, and not his. We decide whose belief is sufficiently orthodox to share Communion with us, who is sufficiently good and pure, who belongs to the right church. . . .Rather than inviting those who seem most unworthy and cannot repay us, we invite the worthy. . ."There is example after example of gentle, and not so gentle reminders to us as readers, that the Gospel of Luke calls us to a discipleship that is not easy, and not comfortable either. Luke tells of a Jesus who comes not preaching so much an afterlife of bliss but a life offered that is truly life. A full life, filled with the Spirit, faithful to God, bearing the cross of discomfort with the joy of knowing that we are doing God's will as did He who was his image. At the end, Mr. González ponders the church of tomorrow. And as we see a decline in the Western Church and a rise in the church of the South, the African, and the East, we see new thinking, new interpretation. We see reflections through the eyes of the poor and the marginalized. He asks:". . .could it be that God's great gift to the worldwide church today is the growing church of the poor, who are teaching us to read the Bible anew? Could it be that God is using the last, the least, the poor, and the excluded to speak once again to the church of the first and the greatest?"Is this the final reversal? Such questions as these do we ponder as we read this most excellent book. Do buy it. You will not regret the decision.

There is no better and easier to read book regarding localization from EMG. It is not fancy and graphics are old but it is the ease of use what makes this book a gem. You can consult the localization of an unusual muscle in less than 30 seconds...

I had to order another copy for our lab as this book gets used so much! Not only the EMG doctors but the movement disorder doctors also!

This guide is spot-on with accurate representation and helpful hints to the electromyographer, either beginning or advanced

Helpful for localization for both EMG and ultrasound guided injections of Botox. Good anatomy, pictures, motor points. Highly recommend.

excellent updated version of the old classic with new content but the original excellent drawings

I love the pictures. This was the only book that really made sense to me. I don't anticipate doing EMG's but, like I said, I like the pictures.

must have for all electromyographer

Must have for EMG guided Botox.
