Very expensive and not a good book. Not worth more than $90 at all. The worse a book, the more expensive it is. I have already returned it.

Pattern recognition has more than its fair share of weighty tomes, most of which are unintelligible to most of us after about chapter 3! This book is exactly what the field needs - a clear introduction, accessible to a variety of audiences, and applicable to a variety of classification problems. It is very well organized and builds the key concepts steadily, using excellent, clear illustrations and useful, practical examples. The author builds up the reader's confidence by using general ideas in linear algebra and statistics, rather than overwhelming him/her with mathematical detail, so that learning becomes almost painless. Clearly this approach has been honed by teaching the material for many years.

Suddenly the field of pattern recognition has become accessible to all. Clear and insightful writing, amazing diagrams (most in color) and incisive worked examples. This is a tour de force in a slim volume. Great for self study, and would make an excellent class text too.

Setting descriptions and plot are excellent, however the ending was a let down and the few editorial glitches this reader uncovered were a bit annoying.With that said, Across the Ages is an entertaining book for YA readers to enjoy who especially like love stories and time travel. Across the Ages is the first installment in Workman’s Across the Ages Time Travel Series.

But disliked the fact that it ran out at 65%, and another story plug began. If there was a warning about this, I surely don't remember it.

Quick and entertaining read that will leave you excited for Book Two. Shorter read than expected, with fun and relateable characters who bring you across the ages with them. Will is arrogant and Lucy selflessly humble and independent, with attraction that is endearing in the classic opposites who inevitably attract.Workman has written an engaging story that will keep you enthralled with anticipation for the next in this series. I found myself disappointed that there was only one gripping climax that left me wanting at the end and a little unsatisfied due to its abruptness. Workman has created a light-hearted read that brings the classical era into the modern times and back again flawlessly, with an enjoyable mix of action, romance, mystery and just plain fun!~Book Stalking PR Reviewed

The only negative, a bit of a cliff hanger. I truly hate it when books are divided. In those cases IF I buy the first, book 1, I rately buy any of the rest . If there are 2, I will consider it if there are enough pages to make it worth the money. This is the first time travel book I've read in a long time that has all the elements I like. The main characters were very likeable. Just enough description of the lesser characters to give them life. An interesting story. I have read none like it. I love paranormal, old england and time travel. Perfect recipe for me.

It was different than I thought it was going to be, but the story drew me in all the same. I didn’t want to put it down, and stayed up until the early morning hours reading to find out what happened next. It lost my interest a bit when the main character Lucy and her true love Will were captured by supernatural lions that were controlled by a “god.” I like science fiction and Mythological creatures, but that part of the story seemed a little stretched. Overall it was a good, easy read.

I felt like I was taken back in time as I read. Everything seemed so realistic and right on the money as Lucy traveled forward to the present and everything she had to learn about technology. However, two things irked me. First, the head-hopping. Although there wasn't much of it, that's a huge pet peeve of mine. Second, there was no mention of a cliffhanger, so be warned.

Lucy someone who is being forced to marry Dashel who she has known from childhood but does not love . but her Grandmother Agatha gave her a necklace amulet . that if she takes it is will take her to her true love .. but will her true love be Dashel or will it be someone else ..Will someone who finds artifacts as well as many other things who knows Lucy's true grandfather .. will Lucy want Will or Dashel if she takes her Grandmothers advice or stay with Dashel and accept that she don't love him in the way he needs her to .. anyways probably last book before christmas lol but not the last book of the year ..

Lucy Channing lives in 1815 in England. She is supposed to marry her childhood best friend… Whom she does not love romantically. Holding out that something will change her fate, Lucy’s grandmother comes through with a locket to transport Lucy to her true love. Traveling to 2015 is quite a shock to Lucy, especially when the first person she meets is the arrogant, egotistical William Godwin.The first chapter was completely unnecessary and was only mildly related to the story told in the rest of the novel. I skimmed it so I could get to the actual story being told.Lucy lives a typical life in the 1800’s in her class, but she has atypical feelings for a woman in her time. She thinks she can marry for love and passion and is not satisfied with her soon to be betrothed because she is not in love with him. Because she still loved him as a friend, it wasn’t that big a deal for her to find her ‘true love’ because the match was a good one! She could have learned to love Dashel and had a good life.I absolutely enjoyed every minute and thought Lucy had when she was spirited 200 years into the future. I understood so well what she was going through because it was described in great detail and her thoughts were spot on. She was a traveler in a new land and new time and new world.I didn’t believe in the romance between Lucy and her ‘true love’ William. It felt forced and rushed.The pacing was very uneven and the ending was incredibly rushed and then abruptly left off. I will not be reading further.

It shows how common Japanese expressions and sentences are constructed, breaks them down for you, and translates each concept of each sentence (using the building block approach). Each Japanese line spoken by a manga character is presented first in kanji/kana script, then translated into the English meaning of each word/phrase, then further translated and rationalized into idiomatic English. These 3 steps show clearly how Japanese sentences are constructed. Often instructional books skip the 2nd step.Mangajin is fun to read and groups common Japanese expressions you hear every day into chapters and explains them. For example, there are chapters dedicated to "the meaning of Hai" alone. "Hai" doesn't just mean yes, it can mean different things depending on context, and the book uses manga to show each context. It is amply illustrated with manga panels from popular books from the 1990s.I own both Vol 1 and 2. My only regret is that they did not continue this magazine or series, because there should be enough to fill at least 2 more volumes.

Once upon a time there was a wonderful magazine called "Mangajin" which helped you learn Japanese through Manga -- Japanese comics. In the process it also taught about Japanese life and culture as well as serving as an introduction to Manga themselves.The magazine, alas, is no more. But this book is a collection of excerpts aimed specifically at learning Japanese.Starting very simply, it walks you through Japanese using panels from manga to illustrate the concepts. It also uses a unique representation system where each sentence is shown first in Japanese characters, then in phonetic English, then in a literal translation, and usually a colloquial English translation. This is coupled with explanatory notes in English.The book won't teach you Japanese by itself, but it will help you get started in an easy, fun manner.

This book does not teach grammar or vocabulary: each chapter is about one particular Japanese expression such as "sumimasen", "shitsurei shimasu" and gives various examples of how those expressions are used in everyday Japanese. It truly is invaluable, as it would take a significant amount of work for someone to figure out all the diverse, sometimes contradictory, possible uses of each of those expressions on their own.I would like to add that while the format is similar, the content is NOT the same as Japanese the Manga Way - it is complementary, and I would highly recommend you also acquire that book.

Not suitable for serious study since romanization hinders reading progress. The eye will of course always go there first, and the paper is too thin to redact with marker. Furigana would have been preferable for beginning/intermediate students. I can post this same review for a few other books made in this style. It is a completely discredited "feature" and has to stop, especially since the book would be pretty good otherwise.

This is a great book to get if you have already learned 6 months of Japanese or so (at least). It is a series of chapters illustrating a few interesting words or topics of Japanese language, all illustrated with bits of real, commercially available manga. But be warned, they use a "magnifying glass" approach which I loved: they focus on ONE word for several pages. For example, the chapter on "hon", one of the counters, goes on and on for four pages of comic book panels. I will never forget what that word means and how to use it and I was fascinated with the examples from the comics. But then again, it is just ONE word.It is a book for people that are not in a hurry and are having fun with Japanese, as opposed to people that need to learn Japanese quickly for a particular objective.

I read this and volume two a couple of times reverting back to it when I needed a break from actual studying. I may not be an expert in Japanese and other comments might be more to your liking but it does help in breaking the cultural barriers between me and my wife. I would definitely recommend this for kids to start learning from. And I love the ideas presented in this book so much that I lent it to a friend who never returned it yet! But I will get it back one of these days since I want to learn a bit more and indulge in my reading escapism!

I really think it's too bad, but this one, the number two and japanese the manga way are really great

I am a lawyer and have cause from time to time to negotiate with lenders on my clients' behalf. In my opinion, the strategies in this book are quite good. Not all of them will apply to any particular situation, but for each case I would estimate that you will find at least five useful strategies that you can implement directly. It's important to note that you do NOT have to be in the midst of a lawsuit to benefit from the content- the ideas can be used by a borrower to be educated on the law and practical matters to consider when applying for a loan modification, for example; or when negotiating a short sale or a foreclosure remediation matter. Also, I like the way the author has organized the book. Each 'strategy' is essentially a legal theory you can use, with arguments and analysis to back it up, and written in a way that is easy to understand. Overall, this is a good and handy manual for borrowers coming up against the big guys. Well done.

I wish I would have read this book before my foreclosure. I, as many during the financial meltdown, was intentionally cheated by a mortgage banker. I was not able to educate myself on foreclosure, and predatory lending laws, until I was already removed from my home of 20 years. My biggest mistake was not being educated in the foreclosure process. Had I had this book, and an attorney, I believe I would have been successful in not only an intentional misrepresentation claim, but also claims of mortgage fraud and predatory lending. The banks attorney's did not sign their original complaint or their summary judgement motion. Because of bad advice I did not appeal, and that cost me dearly in the long run. It turns out that had I appealed on the issue of an unsigned defective motion, I could have ended up with a free home. That is a simple technicality that I discovered on my own, but without an attorney the judge simply ignored my answers and found for the bank. My example is why every homeowner needs to be educated in the law and the process. More importantly, discuss your case with a competent foreclosure or consumer rights attorney as soon as possible. This book was a very simple read and easy to understand. It only took me a few hours to read. I am from WI as is the author, but I think that no matter were your from this book will give you a good primmer on foreclosure law and the legal process. For the Wisconsin readers I have an update for this book. In December of 2015 the Wisconsin legislature signed a new law called 2015 Wisconsin ACT 120. This law now precludes any claims against mortgage Brokers for oral agreements, or what's called promissory estoppel. Basically they sold out the people of Wisconsin and created what I consider an unconstitutional law. Make sure you get any promises in writing of they are worthless in Wisconsin. If you are not from WI and were cheated by an oral agreement brush up on promissory estoppel to enforce your oral agreement. If your reading this review its probably because some bank has screwed you. The sooner you get help the better. Statutes of limitations are the banks best friend.
