Review

“This view from the inside is not to be missed.” —A. GARY SHILLING, president of A. Gary Shilling & Co., Inc. “Danielle DiMartino Booth has written an informed, thoughtful, eye-opening—and justifiably angry—memoir of her days at the Federal Reserve. A monetary broadside for our populist world.” —JAMES GRANT, publisher of Grant’s Interest Rate Observer “An outsider-turned-insider gives a gripping account of how false, but stubbornly held beliefs at the Fed helped create the global economic crisis as well as contribute to rising inequality in the United States. Brutally honest and engagingly written . . . A mustread.” —WILLIAM R. WHITE, former economic adviser and head of the monetary and economic department at the Bank for International Settlements “Penned with bold prose and laced with compelling arguments, Booth delineates the exact reasons that the Fed has failed America and why America should abandon the Fed. Fed Up is a must-read tale of the over-reaching power, unfettered egos and clueless bravado that struck at the core of American stability, and must do so no longer.” —NOMI PRINS, author of All the Presidents’ Bankers “The road to hell is paved with good intentions. [Booth] personalizes and clearly explains the influence, the danger, and the consequences of monetary activism gone wild.” —PETER BOOCKVAR, chief market analyst at The Lindsey Group “This book is a must read for every American who wants to stay informed and educated about our financial future.” —ALLEN WEST, member of the 112th US Congress “If you want to read a strong counterpoint—from the perspective of a lonely non-Keynesian within the Fed—to the ‘we saved the world’ narratives of those who led us to zero yields, asset bubbles, and a fast-shrinking middle class, this is it.“ —ROB ARNOTT, chairman of Research Affiliates “Danielle DiMartino Booth proves that insightful technical analysis and hilarious anecdotes can exist between the covers of the same book.” —JAMES RICKARDS, author of The Road to Ruin “Booth’s insider status, captivating personality, mellifluous writing style, and keen sense of observation are wrapped up into a thoughtful analysis of our country’s dependency on the Fed and the worrisome consequences of that addiction.” —DOUGLAS A. KASS, founder and president of Seabreeze Partners Management Inc.“DiMartino Booth combines a lively writing style with careful research, quotes and annotations. Her first-hand account, which juxtaposes the complacency inside the Fed with the unfolding crisis outside, should appeal to a wide range of readers, from critics of the Fed and market participants to the average person eager to learn how monetary policy is conceived and executed.”–CAROLINE BAUM, MarketWatch

First, my only real complaint about the book is the extreme overuse of acronyms. If the reader is not a member of the financial industry -- either Wall Street or the Fed -- the use of acronyms makes for a very difficult read and forces the reader to constantly go back to find the definitions. What I liked most about the book was the disclosure of just how incompetent Greenspan, Geithner, Bernanke, and Yellen were/are regarding the central planning of an economy. I also appreciated the author showing the greed and corruption of Jamie Dimon, Larry Summers, and Goldman Sachs. Here are some statements by the author that I found interesting:Page 91 -- The Fed, Fisher argued, was giving in to a "siren call" to "indulge rather than discipline risky financial behavior."Page 252 -- But remember, at the end of the fairy tale, the wolf shows up. The Federal Reserve's radical monetary policy -- imposed by academics with no experience in the business world -- has proved a disaster on an unprecedented scale. Global systemic risk has been exponentially amplified by the Fed's actions.Page 260 -- Central banking around the world has become a growth industry, populated with PhD economists and a few former investment bankers. These unelected men -- and a few women, most notably Yellen -- control the world's economic system. They are arguably more powerful than the world's political leaders chosen by voters.Page 262 -- Mistakes by the Fed included missing the housing bubble and financial crisis, being "blinded" to the slowdown in the growth of worker productivity, and failing to anticipate how inflation behaved in regard to the job market. The Fed's economic projections of GDP and how fast the economy would grow were wrong time and again. Finally, I found it amazing that the Fed continues to rely on models created by hundreds of elitist PhD economists even though those models are wrong more often than they are correct.

Very rarely do we get an inside view of Federal Reserve decision-making from someone near the top. Even more rarely do we get such a view from someone who writes as clearly and wittily as Danielle DiMartino Booth. Fed Up is as much a page-turner as any Tom Clancy or Steven King novel, with one difference. This story isn't fiction. It's all too real and affects every one of us. Highly recommended.

It was an interesting book in terms of discussing the dynamics of the fed and in general getting deeper into the story than can easily be found in the general media. It fell a little short of my expectations in terms of suggesting policy alternatives and why they might have led to a superior outcome once the crisis hit ; same with the discussion of derivatives - the author gives a reasonable account of what happened, but does not break it down, compare it to previous crises, etc. in a way that might suggest how something similar might be detected and/or headed off in the future.Well written and I was not unhappy I purchased it, just came away feeling more like I had read a dramatic novel when I was expecting more policy analysis and data-supported recommendations. Probably a 3.5, but couldn't quite get myself to a 4.

Almost makes you think a PhD in Economics should disqualify you from a position with the Fed. With their consistent tunnel vision and inability to appreciate economic facts right before their eyes, they've done great economic harm to the taxpayers of this country. This book is refreshing in it's approach and insight into the Fed's policy making approach and exposes the out-of-touch theories resulting from academics with no real life experience in the world they claim to understand with their "mathematical models".

Are you in your "golden years" and hurting financially? You played by the rules, you worked hard and you saved for retirement and now you are scraping by on a tiny income.Read "Fed Up" to find out how the Federal reserve has rigged the game against you.But worse than that, the Fed has set us up for more bubbles like the 2008 crash, encouraged Washington to grow the national debt, and has set up insurance companies and pension funds for a devastating crash.Hard to believe that an opaque bureaucracy that most of us know little about can have so much power, but Danielle DiMartino Booth shows the power of the Fed. As an aside, she shows how people with limited real world experience and a demonstrated practical incompetence (but with very good power acquisition skills) can rise to a level where they can affect every aspect of our lives. If this book doesn't make you want to grab your pitchfork and torch, then nothing will. If you need an explanation of how Trump was elected, this glimpse into the inner workings of the Washington system will explain why Americans are both frustrated and angry.Danielle DiMartino Booth illustrates Felix Dennis' statement: "America is an empire. I hope you know that now. All empires, by definition, are bumbling, shambolic, bullying, bureaucratic affairs, as certain of the rightness of their cause in infancy, as they are corrupted by power in their dotage."

A total gem, and a must-read for any citizen interested in discovering what goes on behind the closed doors of America's most secretive policy institution.Ms. DiMartino Booth's objective observations and wonderful prose shed light where little has been before, unmasking the other-world academics whose monetary and fiscal policies effect us all. Bravo.Do not miss this breezy, engrossing account of the Federal Reserve by someone who was there. Great!

It was a nice story, but time was all over the place. At the beginning we meet the omega Carter a bartender and cousin to the previous books omega Alex. And alpha Jamison, a lawyer and brother to the previous books alpha Harrison. They meet and have a one night stand. Then the next chapter some time has passed, I’m assuming weeks, but it doesn’t say. Then the next chapter a couple more weeks have passed with the alpha saying he would go see the omega. It doesn’t say why he had avoided him or what was going on. It was very jumbled. Then all the sudden the omegas ex was back and some things happen. I wish it had been cleaner. On to the MC’s. I have to say I couldn’t really stand carter. He was kind of a jerk throughout most of the book, but only to Jamison. It didn’t really make sense and it’s never really clarified WHY he is such an a hole. First he leaves without saying anything, then he finds out he’s pregnant and wasn’t going to tell the father. Then he doesn’t tell the father when he has baby dr appts. Doesn’t want to include him or ‘bother’ him. It’s frustrating. I don’t know what the author was going for, but throughout most of the book, I just kept wanting Jamison to walk away and find a partner that didn’t treat him like he was an annoying fly.I liked the other books better.Trigger warning - there is domestic violence and attempted rape.***spoiler and a rant***This is something that really bothers me when reading mm books. A lot of authors that write about their mc’s being almost raped or even full on raped have the victim jumping into bed within an unrealistic time frame. This one was no different. He literally went from almost being raped and being traumatized to having fun laughing sex within a half hour of each other. It comes off as the attempted rape or rape of a man doesn’t really affect them like it would a woman and that’s just not true. Like it’s just not a big deal.

Like the last series, the last book is shorter having barely any real story line, and finishes super weak.We don't understand the antagonist, he's just there being a bad guy. Shows up for no reason, and is so one trick pony, that he doesn't even rate as a person. The time lone is off. Several times the story says that the relationships is a few months old, but this piggy backs on the previous book then that means at least a year. Why does the story jump between a few months and then over a year? The ending is so rushed it doesn't even make sense. We go from picnic in the park to look here is a baby in three minutes or six paragraphs. That's like a sign of not even trying. As I'm sure I've said at the end of the last series, complaining about the same last book sprint, do better.

While I did enjoy this book it really needs some editing work. Random letters for no reason and sentences were missing words.

End of series everyone got a HEA. I really liked the MC's Cam and Jamison look forward to the next series.

I’m so not happy this series is ending but I am looking forward to the spin off series! This was a great mpreg story! It had great characters and a little intrigue. Definite recommend!

The story between Jamison and Carter is an adventure. These two men do everything they can to stay apart, while all they both want is to be together. It was a great conclusion to the Millerstown series.

I loved this story. Sweet, sexy and just a touch of danger. The characters were fun to read. Definitely recommend

Review

IT-Director 10/2000

From the Back Cover

A thorough update to the industry standard for designing, developing, and deploying data warehouse and business intelligence systems The world of data warehousing has changed remarkably since the first edition of The Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit was published in 1998. In that time, the data warehouse industry has reached full maturity and acceptance, hardware and software have made staggering advances, and the techniques promoted in the premiere edition of this book have been adopted by nearly all data warehouse vendors and practitioners. In addition, the term "business intelligence" emerged to reflect the mission of the data warehouse: wrangling the data out of source systems, cleaning it, and delivering it to add value to the business. Ralph Kimball and his colleagues have refined the original set of Lifecycle methods and techniques based on their consulting and training experience. The authors understand first-hand that a data warehousing/business intelligence (DW/BI) system needs to change as fast as its surrounding organization evolves. To that end, they walk you through the detailed steps of designing, developing, and deploying a DW/BI system. You'll learn to create adaptable systems that deliver data and analyses to business users so they can make better business decisions. With substantial new and updated content, this second edition of The Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit again sets the standard in data warehousing for the next decade. It shows you how to: Identify and prioritize data warehouse opportunities Create an architecture plan and select products Design a powerful, flexible, dimensional model Build a robust ETL system Develop BI applications to deliver data to business users Deploy and sustain a healthy DW/BI environment The authors are members of the Kimball Group. Each has focused on data warehousing and business intelligence consulting and education for more than 15 years; most have written other books in the Toolkit series. Very well written. I had to get 2nd Edition to match the classwork syllabus but I'm sure 3rd Edition is just as good. Our class lectures would cover the material pretty well but leave a lot of questions. I'd then read the matching chapters and it would walk me right thru it.One thing; a DW concepts in general seem "Ivory Tower" that wouldn't survive the real world, but then , I'm just learning this stuff so I could be wrong about that. Rather; I wonder how much they still apply. For example; he states it takes 6 months to build a "Data Mart", and add 6 months for each additional data source. So with 40 data marts in a typical enterprise, we're talking 10 years! 20 years if there are 2 data sources in the enterprise. That simply doesn't add up. Somehow I think the industry would have to move quicker than that, but at least he lays out the methods.

I took Kimball's class on the data warehouse lifecycle a few years ago. Recently as I was reviewing some of the problems our organization is wrestling with in building our data warehouse, I went back to the book which is now some 4 years old... but the fundamentals are all there and really they haven't changed much. This is the "bible" I use, and many DW/BI professionals would say the same. If you want to understand the ecosystem for a sound DW/BI solution, this is where you go. There are many other great books that add to it, but start here.

This book covers the complete life cycle including project management, requirements definition, technical architecture design, dimensional modeling, physical design, data staging, and finally deployment and maintenance. I think his approach to planning is a good one, and I am fighting to find the necessary business sponsor and a clear business motivation. Their approach to interviewing key players is a good way to collect requirements. The importance of conformed dimensions and building a data warehouse bus architecture matrix is a great exercise. Some of the controversy with respect to his advocacy of denormalizing has to do with how "pure" your warehouse is. For example if I am merely providing analysis of production data or querying vertically across data marts, I would retain the data in normalized E/R, but present a more dimensional view to end users. I appreciated the discussion on back room versus front room metadata and using active metadata to drive operations. I was disappointed with the lack of discussion of warehouse testing with only a few pages on data quality and cleansing during data staging, and just one paragraph on balancing between the warehouse and production data. This book is very useful, and the accompanying CD will save time creating your own project documents.

The book is worth it just for the project management tools and checklists/templates. Especially the Lifecycle Project Plan and all related templates on the CD-ROM. I felt that alone justified the purchase. I needed some ideas for an ERP, 21 CFR Part 11 Electronic Recrods/Electronic Signatures, implementation and verification/validation project, and some of the more strategic discussions and templates in the book provided some additional ideas and tools to structure my project (w/ modification, of course). So those interested in something more than data warehousing may still find this publication extremely useful as I did.

A VERY good book on data warehousing. It is quite a heavy read, it is stated to have cca. 500 pages but on my Kindle DX it looked more like 1500 pages. It took me a while to get through it and I read it from cover to cover but it is definitely worth it.The writing style of the authors is quite accessible so you would learn a lot even without much previous experience in this domain.

Good book. Many reverse way of thinking, to give you warring what could be wrong.

This book is the bible for many IT professionals involved in Data Warehouse management or IT project management. This information is as current and good today as is was when the first edition was written in 2008. That's says a lot for a field that is constantly being updated due to technology. The basics still matter. This and Ralph Kimball's other books should be on every IT professional's desk.

Great quality! Thanks

This was a great way to learn and introduce Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Our teenage son had problems understanding and getting into it. This, not only got him to read it, but he understand it much better as well, which did lead to a very nice essay and discussion on his project. It was done very well, and the art style is fun and engaging. I would recommend this for young and old.

I showed my students the manga versions of Shakespeare's tragedies, and several of them borrowed these editions to read overnight. I plan to keep a deep inventory of these versions in my classroom's bookshelves so that my students might continue to become "hooked on Shakespeare."

Great series. Kids love it

It got me through an otherwise laborious play quite painlessly. It was really entertaining and the art was lovely. My only disappointment was that the original text was abridged to fit into the manga form,

This a great manga in good condition. Thank you so much.

I liked it because the book wasn't so bad or the pages were ripped. I also like the fact that the pages weren't folded either.

Great graphic novel version of Twelfth Night. It comprises the story well, and has interesting character designs. You feel endeared toward Viola's plight of being caught between a love triangle. The setting has been moved to a more Steampunk-themed retelling which doesn't hinder, but creates a more amusing version of Shakespeare's land of Illyria.

I fell in love with the adorable and beautiful drawing style in how "Twelfth Night" was portrayed. One of my favorites of Shakespeare's works, I inhaled the book and found it much easier to understand than if I were to read the play. For those of you that are familiar with manga art-style, I'm sure you'll appreciate and enjoy it as much as I did. When I finished the book, my sibling decided to read it for herself and she was hooked as well. Definitely keeping this in mind for future reference should I end up buying "Romeo and Juliet" or "A Midsummer Night's Dream".

I loved this book. It really hit home for me with the setting being the Springfield Armory in Springfield MA, the town over from where I grew up and currently live. I loved the story of two sisters and theirs struggles with each other all throughout their lives. From their youth, there was always a rivalry between Ruth and Millie, Ruth being the brains and Millie being the beauty. Ruth blamed Millie for many failed relationships in her youth and brought this jealousy into their adulthood, she wanted nothing more that to leave Millie behind in Brooklyn. Their Mother's influence did not help matters. Once the parents are lost to them, the bonds of sisterhood are tested throughout the book. As an only child, it is fascinating to see how two siblings cut from the same cloth could be so different.I loved learning more about the Armory at wartime and what a powerful presence it had in Springfield. How important it was for women to step up and take these manufacturing jobs to support our soldiers on the front. The characters are developed wonderfully and the author switches back and forth between two time periods in Brooklyn and Springfield. Secrets are revealed and we are drawn in to see what will happen next to the two sisters. Additional characters, such as Arietta the singing cook at the Armory, also add so much to the story. As well as familiar places from my youth like Johnson's Bookstore, Steigers Tea Room and Mercolino's Bakery! The author's note at the end explains how much research she did and how true to life this book was at this time in our history, changing only a few timelines to keep her book flowing. I enjoyed every minute of it and learning more about the historic gem that is right in my own backyard.

Sisters with secrets. If they only knew what the other was thinking. Or, rather, keeping. This is Lynda Cohen Loigman’s novel THE WARTIME SISTERS. Loved equally by their parents but treated differently. Expectations are set from the get-go and their lives take on a pattern. Harboring resentment becomes the standard.A glimpse into the past of a tenuous period. Loigman tells a tale with intricate details of family life – how tense the world was during the time of war from different perspectives and a unique take of historical fiction at an armory where women were holding down the fort on the home front.Reading the Yiddish spoken by the parents, which is woven throughout the story and reminiscent of a generation gone by, brings a touch of nostalgia, particularly if you grew up with Jewish immigrant grandparents.THE WARTIME SISTERS is a story with characters who are real enough to tug at your heartstrings, that demonstrates what happens when trust is broken, the powerful destruction of secrets, and that finding strength from within is possible.

This well-written 285-page historical fiction is divided into 3 parts and smoothly transitions back and forth between well-developed characters primarily in the 1930s and 1940s between Brooklyn, New York, and Springfield, Massachusetts. After reading an outstanding review by a trusted Amazon.com reviewer that I follow, I could hardly wait to get my hands on Lynda Cohen Loigman’s novel, “The Wartime Sisters.”Ruth and Millie are sisters born 3 years apart. The younger, Millie, is blessed with beauty and the favorite of their mother, Florence who believes this daughter is destined to become a princess. Meanwhile, Ruth is the plain studious and responsible daughter who is portrayed as the one her mother appears bored with and largely ignored or compared in a lesser light than her younger sister.Arthur, a West Point graduate, and Ruth marry and move to Springfield offering Ruth a chance for a new life out of her sister’s shadow; however, her mother hopes that she separate Millie from her uneducated good-for-nothing suitor, Lenny by convincing Ruth to take Millie with her to Massachusetts. In the meantime, Arthur and Ruth are blessed with twin girls, Alice and Louise.Following tragic events, Lenny and Millie are married, have a son, Michael when her drunken husband batters, abandoned and leaves her penniless. Millie escapes and settles temporarily in her sister’s residence where she finds a job at the Armory and makes several friends.Colonel Peter Walsh is the Commanding Officer. His wife, Lillian and her 4 children--Margaret, Peter, Frances, and Thomas—become close friends with Ruth and Millie and their children and eventually take Millie in after another argument between the sisters.Millie also becomes close friends with Arietta Benevetto, a talented singer and cook at the Armory.Fred and Grace Peabody are additional disgusting antagonists that the author develops that heightens distress and suspense. Now scarred, meaner than ever, very dangerous, desperate and crazed, Lenny tracks Millie down, tries to get her to give him money and then threatens her, leaving her in fear of harm that he will do to her and her family. This books grabbed my attention, held my interest and kept me enthralled during the wee hours of the morning through the last page.Following the novel, the author’s notes detail the historical sources and the liberties she took to bring the characters and events of this story together this spellbinding historical fiction.I loved the author’s writing style, the tale, and the character development and can hardly wait to read her other novel and those to come.Enjoy!

Lynda Cohen Loigman's seamless writing style pulled me in on page one. Her careful descriptions, meticulous pacing, and driving plot, create an exquisitely crafted novel. The first half of the novel sets up the story through brilliant character development. From here, Loigman picks up the pace so that I found it hard to put the book down. The four main female characters weave their way throughout the book in short, crisp chapters. This is a story that pulls at the heart. It steps gently but with an outright awareness of what drives the human spirit to inflict pain but ultimately find compassion and forgiveness.

The Rules Do Not Apply: A Memoir, by Ariel Levy

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of March 2017: The preface of Ariel Levy’s memoir, The Rules Do Not Apply, is a knock-out. Though it’s the Cliffs Notes to her book/life, it’s written with such clarity that it transcends the searing pain and devastating loss that she’s about to chronicle: “I am thunderstruck by feeling at odd times, and then I find myself gripping the kitchen counter, a subway pole, a friend’s body, so I won’t fall over. I don’t mean that figuratively. My sorrow is so intense it often feels like it will flatten me.” With brawny and disarming candor, Levy weaves together the story of her life exactly as she was determined to live it – becoming a staff writer for the New Yorker, falling in love with her partner (“feeling molten and golden and saved”), writing their own vows (“gay marriage wasn’t even legal—we were making it up!”), becoming pregnant at 37 – and how it all came crashing down. Teeming with vitality and wit, The Rules Do Not Apply is a memoir sparkling with insight on grief and grit. --Al Woodworth, The Amazon Book Review

Review

“I read The Rules Do Not Apply in one long, rapt sitting. Unflinching and intimate, wrenching and revelatory, Ariel Levy’s powerful memoir about love, loss, and finding one’s way shimmers with truth and heart on every page.”—Cheryl Strayed  “Every deep feeling a human is capable of will be shaken loose by this profound book. Ariel Levy has taken grief and made art out of it.”—David Sedaris “Beautifully crafted . . . This book is haunting; it is smart and engaging. It was so engrossing that I read it in a day.”—The New York Times Book Review “Levy’s wise and poignant memoir is the voice of a new generation of women, full of grit, pathos, truth, and inspiration. Being in her presence is energizing and ennobling. Reading her deep little book is inspiring.”—San Francisco Book Review“Levy has the rare gift of seeing herself with fierce, unforgiving clarity. And she deploys prose to match, raw and agile. She plumbs the commotion deep within and takes the measure of her have-it-all generation.”—The Atlantic“Cheryl Strayed meets a Nora Ephron movie. You’ll laugh, ugly cry, and finish it before the weekend’s over.”—theSkimm “This year’s must-read memoir.”—W “Levy’s tone is deeply honest, and at the same time manages to not be defensive or apologetic about her decisions; she’s not judgmental, but remains highly inquisitive. The through line is her struggle to see things as accurately as possible, to translate her gift for interview and narrative into something personally productive. . . . I loved Levy’s book.”—Jezebel “[The Rules Do Not Apply] is a short, sharp American memoir in the Mary Karr tradition of life-chronicling. . . . Levy, like Karr, is a natural writer who is also as unsparing and bleakly hilarious as it’s possible to be about oneself. . . . I devoured her story in one sitting.”—Financial Times “It’s an act of courage to hunt for meaning within grief, particularly if the search upends your life and shakes out the contents for all the world to sift through. Levy embarks on the hunt beautifully.”—Chicago Tribune “Frank and unflinchingly sincere . . . A gut-wrenching, emotionally charged work of soul-baring writing in the spirit of Joan Didion, Helen Macdonald, and Elizabeth Gilbert . . . A must-read for women.”—Bustle“Ariel Levy is a writer of uncompromising honesty, remarkable clarity, and surprising humor gathered from the wreckage of tragedy. I am the better for having read this book.”—Lena Dunham “Ariel Levy seems to be living out the unlived lives of an entire generation of women, simultaneously. Free to do whatever she chooses, she chooses everything. While reinventing work, marriage, family, pregnancy, sex, and divorce for herself from the ground up, Levy experiences devastating loss. And she recounts it all here with searing intimacy and an unsentimental yet openhearted rigor.”—Alison Bechdel

Best book I've read in a while. Incredible writing, full of insight and rich emotional detail. I'm rather shocked by the negative reviews. She was narcissistic? Yes. She's self aware enough to name it and to wrestle with it, and possibly to have grown beyond it. There were too many tragedies? Yes. Several tragedies brewed in the background and then became a full-blown reality one after another. Tragedies sometimes do. There were too many tangents? Well, it's a personal accounting, I think. A "life so far" in review. And I'm not sure you can understand the arcs of her relationships until you get a sense of her parents' relationship. I found myself highlighting various turns of phrase that struck me as profound - and that's not something I do with a lot of books. Here's a good way to tell if this book would be of interest to you. If you find the following paragraph to be well written and worth exploring (even if you think the answers to these questions should be reasonably self-evident), you will likely enjoy the book: "Who cares if sometimes you bring out your seduction skill set - briefly! -for a person other than your spouse and you have a little adventure with your body? Why did that have to be at your spouse's expense? Couldn't you promise your deepest love, your first allegiance, to your favorite person without locking yourself in a chastity belt and presenting her with the key?"

I began this book expecting to find the author as off-putting as I found her other writings. The “why” doesn’t have a place in this review, but it’s important to know that I didn’t care for Ms. Levy’s work. I purchased this because I admit I was intrigued by how one loses all she did and still draws breath. I admit to being humbled by the author’s laying bare her failings, her scars, hell...her entire being. No finger pointing, no blame, unless directed at herself. A short, brutal read I will carry with me forever. Ms. Levy, I want you to know I would’ve looked at your pictures, had you tried to show them to me. I would cry with you. I would get s**t-faced drunk with you and laugh until I was convinced I’d die from it. Regardless of the fact you and I are on opposite ends of our beliefs-politically and personally-we are both women who have known love and loss; and not only survived, but damn well learned to live again with it. This shared survival trumps our differences. Kudos, Ms. Levy. Your honesty broke my heart. But it also reminded me that we, as women, should remember our shared experience and not be bound by our differences in opinions.

I was surprised. It's a book about everything, with no reason for much of what's in it--not to this reader. Was her editor just too indulgent? Had, instead, the whole book been written to the final line in the book, "Nature. Mother Nature. She is free to do whatever she chooses," this would have been one helluva powerful book. Had it been the central metaphor, amazing. But it's not. We learn about how she learned to cook. But why? Where's the pay off? There are profound details snuck in sideways, like her father's cancer diagnosis (and her mother's mastectomies). They come in suddenly and are gone. Why? Unless we're meant to understand that she (and and those she loves), like the rest of us, have also suffered the indignities of being alive. Why so many pages early on about her mother's special boyfriend? I hate to say it, but so what? It doesn't add up to much emotionally throughout. I wanted to, but felt so little, particularly for our author. And that's plainly wrong--because some of the language is taught and lovely, and anyone who suffers loss deserves our empathy and compassion. Missing: depth.

I will always remember this book for how truly awful it was.The author is completely consumed with herself beginning to end. No revelatory moments or true self reflection. Writing about the devastation you leave in your wake or your own failure to recognize (perhaps blatant ignoring of) illness/addiction in your loved ones is not in and of itself redemptive if you continue to act as a narcissist. This book is a recommend only if you are trying to understand what goes on in the brain of narcissist. When I finally remember who recommended this book to me they will get an earful. And her writing is ok but not memorable at all. At least I can eliminate her other works from my reading list.
