Cricket Explained, by Robert Eastaway

From Library Journal

The complexities of the game of cricket are lost on most Americans. Eastaway, an avid cricketer, attempts to remedy this situation in a short yet inclusive look at a sport that is popular in Great Britain as well as numerous nations around the world, usually former British colonies. In addition to dispensing some basic history, the author attempts to show exactly what happens on the playing field, which player does what and why, and what all the baffling terminology (googly, flipper, cow corner, tonk, etc.) means. Those already bitten by the cricket "bug" (pun intended) will find this work helpful, but if readers don't have much interest in cricket to begin with, this book will probably not instill any. Written mostly in a question-and-answer format, with illustrations that are more cutesy than useful, this title will probably be of limited interest. Libraries that maintain in-depth sports collections should consider purchasing. Others can get by with a good sports or general encyclopedia.- David M. Turkalo, Social Law Lib., BostonCopyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Easy read and nicely illustrated with simple drawings to explain many of the finer (and confusing) points of cricket. Over the years I've had a number of my English friends try to explain the game of cricket to me, but all in vain. Invariably it ended in complete confusion. However, having read and studied this little book, the curtain has lifted on some of confusion just a bit. Yet, though reasonably enlightened, I think the real problem lies in the fact that the game of cricket was never meant to be understood fully by the American psyche. It's totally British and can only be fully understood and appreciated by those raised with a sense of the game's history and traditions.Nonetheless, this is a fine little book and one which will certainly give you a better understanding of this most English of games---cricket!

Great book. Quick read with a thorough explanation of the game. As someone who knew almost nothing about cricket before reading this book, I feel as if I could now watch a cricket match and understand most of what is happening. One important thing this book does is avoid getting too technical. Yes, it explains what many of the common terms mean, but it avoids going too in depth into statistics and strategy that would lose many readers unfamiliar with the game. If you know very little about cricket and want to better understand the game, this quick read is the book for you.

For a quick reference guide, one can hardly do better. There is not an overwhelming amount of depth to the book, but as a 'now what exactly was that bit again' kind of work, it's brilliant. The author has a nice, light tone but still manages to make cricket really approachable, even for someone who either doesn't know or even doesn't want to know about cricket.

I am a newby to cricket and was having a hard time finding any books on the rules of cricket, this book is perfect. I appreciate that it is not highbrow nor do they talk down to the reader. It has been a pleasure to read and has answered my questions, (along with Google). I had to look up what the "follow-on" rule was. Test cricket is something else!

This is a very readable book. As an explanation of cricket it goes a long way toward explaining how an apparently boring game can possibly become interesting. After reading I was motivated to find a cricket match on YouTube. The explanations were very helpful but I still find the game, the commentary and the very long times of inaction baffling.

Even an American can understand this explanation

As an American wanting to better understand the game of cricket, this book was invaluable. With so many Cricket Clubs in the Philadelphia area (they're now really just country clubs) it is sad they cricket is no longer played on a regular basis. Haverford and Pennsylvania used to be the two cricket powerhouses of American collegiate cricket, nowadays not so much.

If you are new to Cricket, this is a must-have book along with Cricket Manual: The Official Guide to Playing the Gameby Andy Tennant. The only two you will need!

Review

“In my opinion, ‘Luck’ has little to do with Dick Van Dyke’s life. It is, rather, his innate kindness and talent that have had an extraordinary effect in shaping the man. And what a fascinating self-portrait he’s given us in this book.” —Mary Tyler Moore   “From the time I worked with Dick on the movie Bye Bye Birdie, I have admired his many talents, not the least of which is the joy and enthusiasm he shares with audiences.  I’m a big fan of his……and his book.”—Ann-Margret “Van Dyke tells a wonderful story about himself and his times.  And—in an often surprsingly relevant manner—our times. We’ve always liked the performer—it’s hard not to like Dick Van Dyke—but this will will make you admire him.”--Playbill

This was a fast read. I already liked Dick Van Dyke, but I like him more now. I already respected him as a man and an actor, but I respect him more now. I already envied his energy and I wonder how someone 20 years my senior could be younger than me now!His message of Love and laughter has gotten through, I just hope he has inspired enough youngin's to jump into the ranks with the same message.I don't usually read non-fiction or memoirs but this was worth it. The library put it in my e-bag and I was able to read it on my Kindle along with the 'text-to-speech' guy's help. Thanks for the book and the memories!

The author says in the introduction not to expect any "dirt." Didn't think much about it at the time, but having finished the book I'm wondering if he and I have different definitions of the word.I've never seen any of his movies and never watched any of his subsequent TV shows, but I loved "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and I agree with him that it was a rare combination of writing talent and brilliant casting. It's part of American social history and deservedly so.I was interested in his stories of his life in the entertainment industry. Although he avoids overt criticism, he's a shrewd observer of what goes into the making of television and movies. He tends to focus on those whom he can praise, but he says a lot with what he doesn't say. Entertainment is a tough business and it's impossible to say why some people "make it" and others don't. I suspect it's less talent than persistence, but that's true of everything, isn't it?If he's guarded in talking about his professional life, he's a clam when he talks about his personal life. Of course, even a celebrity has a right to privacy, but a memoir is supposed to be about the person who writes it. He starts out with a frank discussion of the fact that he was conceived out of wedlock, but that's one of the few times I felt he was leveling with his reader. And, let's face it, premarital sex isn't likely to raise many eyebrows now.His sole comment about his wife's miscarriage of her first pregnancy is an off-hand remark that everything happens for a reason. On the other hand, his story of the show-biz chimp who was abused by his trainer and then abandoned in a zoo when he was no longer a meal ticket is one of the most poignant, heart-felt things I've ever read. I found it fascinating that he was willing to show his emotional side when discussing an animal, but not when talking about his loved ones.I don't think his caginess is a conscious effort to protect himself. He's blunt about his struggle with alcoholism and it makes for absorbing reading. Every alcoholic's story is unique, but the same. He's open about the tragedy of his 14-year-old granddaughter's death and it's inevitable effects on him and his family. His deep conviction that he has a responsibility to "go public" with matters that might help others is note-worthy and commendable.Although he maintained a squeaky-clean public image, his long-term marriage to his childhood sweetheart ended in a Hollywood cliche - the successful husband leaving his ageing wife for a younger, more glamorous woman. He stresses that he provided for his first wife financially and that he remained close to his children and grandchildren from that marriage. I think he's right to be proud of those things.I was interested in his relationship with Michelle Triola of the famous "palimony" law suit. He paints a much more nuanced picture of a woman whom the press portrayed as a greedy, vindictive bitch. Even there, the story has some strange gaps and inconsistencies. Michelle lost her $3.6 million community property suit against Lee Marvin, but was awarded a $104,000 judgement which was later reversed. He claims she was devastated because she saw herself as representing women who've been used and tossed aside. He says that the money itself was never an issue, but he gave her $104,000 of his money (a move to which his wife understandably objected.) Seems an odd way to show support if the money wasn't really an object for her.I got this book as a Daily Deal and was thrilled to be able to buy it for $2. It's a fun read and chock fill of entertaining stories. Van Dyke himself comes across as an intelligent, thoughtful, likable man, although not perfect. However, as a memoir it falls short because of his unwillingness to dig deep and reveal himself. That's not dirt, Dick. It's an autobiography.

As memoirs go, Dick covers it all from birth.Based on the conversational tone, I'm assuming he dictated much, if not all, of the book. There are places where, as an editor, I would have trimmed and snipped a bit...and other places I would have had him go further in-depth. For instance, while I came away feeling he was proud of the work he did with Mary Tyler Moore on 39 episodes a year for five or six years, and in spite of the fact they shared an on-screen chemistry unlike any TV show before or since, he seemed more passionate about his relationships with Carl Reiner, Morey Amsterdam and Rose Marie. Even Jerry Paris got more props than Mary.I'm not a Hollywood gossip hound. Perhaps there is/was some animosity between them unknown to me...perhaps he was being diplomatic. I came away feeling he had tossed her from his Christmas card list many years ago. And unfortunately, this book reveals little.Dick comes off as a really nice guy who is pretty darn honest about his human faults and weaknesses. He is fairly honest about his alcoholism, but like most addicts, I felt he probably took some liberties with the truth. (This is a memoir, not a confessional.) And when I say he is a nice guy, he seems deeply devoted to family and friends...and appears to go out of his way not to say a bad thing about anybody in a town famous for eating its young. You'd think after almost 70 years in show biz, he'd want to get in one last shot at somebody! Now into his 90s, sounding hale and hearty, I began to wonder if Dick Van Dyke will live forever. After watching a few episodes of his classic show on Hulu last weekend, I'm convinced he will.Dick...if you're reading this...thank you for helping the world put on a happy face. You are a treasure!

I wasn't a big fan of Dick Van Dyke and yet, I found his story to be interesting and told with a smile. This man is probably a better man than actor and I would say he has given meaning to his life in a way others could never do. I would be very happy to make his acquaintance after reading his story. I think he would be most entertaining and leave me smiling. Just as his book did!

Don't get me wrong...I grew up when "The Dick Van Dyke" was the funniest show on television. I really, really wanted to like this book but found myself skimming major chunks of the simply because it read more like diary entries than the story of his "life." I think were I not such a huge fan of his I would have given it two stars. Very few people can write believable criticism of themselves and Van Dyke is no exception. His rationalization of his affair with Lee Marvin's "ex" was a bit much and anyone who remembers her lawsuit remembers her coming across as money-grubbing rather than the victim she attempted to portray herself as. She came across as a little too perfect and he came across as a bit too much of an Everyman humanitarian, interested only in the betterment of mankind. Even his concerns about the civil rights movement made him sound pompous rather than caring. All-in-all, a huge disappointment.

I can blame this purchase on my 2005 BMW 325. I purchased this book because I was so mad when the plastic parts began leaking either water or PCV gases. After a $730 bill to replace the radiator overflow tank that had a small 1/4 leak. They found the PCV hose (another hard plastic piece) had a leak and would cost $420 to repair. I decided maybe I needed to learn more about hoses and fittings so I could replace the plastic with good solid metal hoses and other metal parts. The plastic leaking PCV hose lead me to AN hoses used on race car engines. That lead me to this book. I confess I read this book in one sitting. It is well written and fits in with my hot rod racing fetish. Reading this book opened up a new view on design and engineering. Gee - I can replace my cheap degradable parts with hoses engineered for airplanes where failure is not an option. Even better the AN hoses cost less than the cheap plastic parts from BMW. If making your car or motorcycle more bullet proof or you want to mod your current car to a higher standard - this book is for you. If you are not open to that kind of work and want to pay your auto shop a bundle of money to replace OEM part with the same cheap plastic OEM parts - well it is your car and your money.

This book would be GREAT for the first time fabricator. Are you embarking on your first true car build, a build where you are not just buying premade parts, but plan to make some of your own. Then Get this book.If you already have a history in fabrication, carpentry, or any other skill that involves careful planning ahead, measuring, and basic power tools, then this book is most likely a bit basic for you.I am a carpenter and have been working on classic European cars sins I was 18. Even though this book is well organized and has some good info, it was not as in depth as I was hoping it would be. It covers basic layout, measurement, material and fastener selection, and proper placement and installation. The sections I found most helpful were the sections that covered different fasteners, their materials, uses, and where to find them. All together not a bad book, just not for the more experienced among us. I was really hoping it would cover more advanced fabrication techniques.

I just got this in the mail, and I'm sending it right back. This book is not about fabrication at all, and only marginally about assembly. It's really just a picture book of nuts, bolts, clamps and AN fasteners. There is a section on safety wiring, and two or three "fabrication" demos -- which are just drilling holes in flat metal. Save your money. If you don't have Ron Fournier's books, get them. This is useless.

For the average shade tree mechanic like myself it's amazing to look at a race car and see all the fancy fittings and clamps and other little bits that separate an OK build from a great one.The author jumps right in and brings up topics that you don't hear people in the car modding community talk about much (a lot of people lust after AN fittings but half of them don't know what the sizes mean). The author gives you pretty much all the information you need to select and purchase the parts you'll need to take your car that extra step.A lot of the practices are pulled from the aviation industry, but why shouldn't they be? if it's good enough for a plane it's even better for a performance car. This book is a wonderful reference in my opinion. and it shows that with just a little bit of thinking and some simple parts and tools you can really take your car (or bike) to the next level.he has example projects in the book that walk you through his process on his car.I've seen many a misused zip-tie, many a badly routed hose, and components mounted in ways that scare me. This book will show you the right way. and while it may be a little more expensive and take a little more time up front, it gives you the confidence that your car will hold together and run properly no matter what you throw at it.I'll say it just once more... If you build or modify cars... pick this one up.

this is an extremely useful and practical book. It covers fabrication of mounts, fastener 101, electrical wiring and routing, fuel and brake hard line construction, etc. It is full of large, detailed color photographs with hundreds of tips and tricks. Save yourself lots of time and frustration - keep this book handy

Wrong title; it should rather be "How to drill holes, and buy parts made for aviation". Unless you are very inexperienced, will this book be a waste of money. There's an interesting chapter about nuts and bolts, but the rest of the book contains just common sense and old news...

Cute little ideas in the book were the only thing I got from it. It's a good book for the beginner but don't waste your time if you've fabricated things before.

Very detailed and thought provoking.

Stealing Home: The Story of Jackie Robinson, by Barry Denenberg

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-- Still another biography of the black baseball pioneer. Denenberg provides an even and straightforward account of Robinson's life on and off the baseball diamond, balancing his athletic skills with his social significance and exploits outside of the sports arena. Occasional typos and errors in sports terminology do appear but are minor in context. A brief but interesting look at innovations to the game provided by the all-black baseball leagues will be of interest to serious baseball fans. The standard black-and-white photographs, many of which are found in the plethora of juvenile Robinson biographies that abound, are included here. No index or other appendixes are included. The reading level, writing style, and information is similar to Mark Alvarez's The Official Baseball Hall of Fame Story of Jackie Robinson (S. & S., 1990). --Tom S. I bought this for my son to read for a third grade biography book report. He loves baseball and asked for a book about Jackie Robinson. He enjoys this book and constantly comments on the interesting facts he is learning. This speaks well of the book as he is, putting it charitably, a reluctant reader.I read the book myself as well. I don't expect a biography aimed at elementary school children to have the same level of complexity or subtlety as a biography for adults. Still, the author lost credibility by stating that UCLA is in Pasadena. UCLA is over 20 miles from Pasadena. Instead of saying UCLA is "right in Pasadena," the author could have said UCLA is "a short ride from Pasadena" (which would have been true when Robinson attended, even though not true in today's traffic) without either confusing his young readers or stating a false fact. The blooper about Pasadena made me wonder what other facts the author got wrong.Still, this is a valuable story for kids to read. It affords a much-needed history lesson on life in segregated America during the first half of the 20th century, and inspiration on two fronts: Jackie Robinson's determination to succeed in a world that was set up to marginalize him, and the controversial but courageous efforts of two principled men, Robinson and Brooklyn Dodgers General Manager Branch Rickey, to clear a trail toward justice--and better baseball. Over the six-year period starting in 1947 when Robinson joined the Dodgers, the team won four National League pennants. Recommended, especially for sports-loving kids.

Good story!

One of my favorite books ever.

My 8 year old son loves Jackie Robinson and this book.

Great book!

I am always looking for books to appeal to the boys in my classroom. This book made the rounds as one boy would recommend it to another. Doesn't get any better than that!

Good book about a great hero.

It is great book. My daughter loved it. It is a very good read for an elementary school child.

I had 2 primary goals going into this book that i’ll honestly spill:1.I wanted to know why she hadn’t had children2.Why it appears Dwayne Wade’s third son is an elephant in the room no one can addressI know this is very messy and childish of me, but hey – like i said , i wanted to get into her business! I regretfully got the answer to my first question in the essay, “Get Out My Pussy”, and the second was answered by a woman in my book club who happened to go through the same experience . . .Although before I get into that, can i just say i love Gabrielle after reading this book. I’m no longer naive enough to say i like her from the characters she’s played on various movie screens, but i plainly love “Nikki”. She told her business so comfortably throughout this collection of essays, that i often found myself laughing out loud, nodding my head in agreeance , or simply telling her to “shutup and get to the point” so often that I felt as though i truly was sitting somewhere close to her ,where she felt comfortable enough to show me some of her “scars”.Some of my favorite essays in the book were, “Black girl blues”, “Crash and burn marriage”, and “Warning:Famous Vaginas get itchy, too. I felt like they removed a barrier to Gabrielle that was present (i could of put it there after watching Too Can Play That Game TBH), where she gives insight into her black experience in America, how that has affected many of her romantic relationships, and how being famous can result in putting vanilla yogurt in your vagina in the wee hours of the morning (you’ll have to read it to know what i’m referring too) Nikki is TRULY a personality removed from any script we may have seen her act out.Although with all that said ,i still felt myself judging her (which isn’t my place and i hated it whenever i would do it ) when she didn’t directly talk about Dwayne’s 4 year old son he had while they were on break. I mean, you see the hashtag #thewades and all you see are images of Gabrielle, Dwayne Wade, his 2 son’s from his previous marriage and his nephew that he raises. That it really left a “weird” taste in my mouth until one of my book club members stated that when she went through a similar situation – she didn’t speak on it until she was fully healed to discuss it. She suggested that Gabrielle may still be working through it, as she had to do with the rest of the issues she can now candidly discuss in these essays. Although when something is still hurting it’s not time to remove the bandage just yet… Overall, it was a great read that me and my book club enjoyed and i would recommend it to anyone who wants to read some crazy, hilarious, and sometimes sad stories and meet the leading lady whose brave enough to tell them.– Kori

If you are looking for a memoir in the strictest sense, this is not that book. If you are seeking a book of essays in the sense of argument presentation, again this is not that book. And that’s a good thing, because what this is, as the subtitle states are stories from the accomplished Gabrielle Union, which works out absolutely fine. And these stories run the gamut from the personal to the professional. She tells stories about race, gender, feeling inadequate, hair, colorism, homophobia, Hollywood, sexuality, school, college, step-parenting, marriage, divorce and even rape. She manages to tell these stories with a fearlessness that entertains as well as informs. Like a high-wire act with no safety net.Gabrielle comes across as a very thoughtful, likable, brave and funny woman, one that I think readers would indeed enjoy a glass of wine with. There are of course elements of memoir, as she takes us through her school years growing up in the suburbs of California, one of the few Black girls in her schools of Pleasanton, CA. There are also elements of essay, like the chapter called Mittens which deals with how Blacks are perceived and policed, and how we often go out of our way to make accommodations to those perceptions. In reference to this she says, “Worse, I am told that people don’t want to hear these stories, but the reality is we experience life in a never-ending loop in which we are told that if we just “make it,” we will enjoy the fruits of our labor: assimilation.”But what makes this book special are the stories and the way she tells them. And digesting the stories on the whole, we see her blossom into the confident audacious and vivacious woman she is presently. She wasn’t always the beautiful woman we think of, when we hear the name Gabrielle Union. In fact she describes herself at an early age,“I was so thin that I looked like a black daddy longlegs spider with buckteeth. This is not overly earnest, false-humility celebrity speak, I swear."It is those type of self-deprecating comments along with the willingness to bare it all that portends an air of authenticity. If you are a fan, you will become a bigger fan and if you’re not than surely you will become one after reading these stories from Gabrielle Union. Thanks to Edelweiss and Dey St. books for an advanced ebook. Book drops 10/17/17.

I really enjoyed reading/listening to this book. The narration made it even more personal. Will definitely read it again.Thank you Gabrielle for sharing your stories. @itsgabrielleu

One of the best books I’ve read all year. It’s funny irreverent and I’m convinced Gabrielle (Nicky) is now one of my best girlfriends. The perfect read to accompany you on a solo trip — she had me laughing, questioning myself, and saying “YASSSS.” I kicked my heels up in giggle fits more than a few times. This book is self-care, self-love, and IDGAF all rolled into one.

I love Gabrielle Union even more after this book she is real open honest truly her authentic self. Love it.The book is very blunt and I can also relate to her not on all of the topics but many of them.

In 2017 I found myself in a reading slump, having only read 3-4 books the entire year. Something definitely had to change, so I decided to go back to the best sellers lists, and give it a try. This was one of the first books that “jumped” out at me.First off let me just say, there are some things that should stay between a husband and wife. However, if he’s comfortable with her sharing them, then so am I. With that said, I had to start over from the beginning with being objective in my thinking. This book is a collection of stories that one would only share with her closest friends, which she explains in her introduction. I found myself reacting to how outspoken and honest she was about her live experiences. Even though it was more expensive than the books I had read in the last few years, I now realize it was a welcomed change.
