The plot was good but, for me, the paragraphs (pages, really) describing in detail the scenery, every board and stone in the buildings being restored, and the work done in the conservatory made the action seem to move in slow (very slow) motion. I started skimming over a lot of it very early in the story. When Sunny Goodwin received word that she had inherited a silk mill in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia she was elated. She intended to sell it as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, she finds that is only one of several others who inherit shares of the mill. Odder still, she learns that the father that she never knew had left behind a ten year old daughter. The mill is being renovated by Sawyer Hartwell who had assumed that he would be the sole inheritor as he had been adopted by Sunny's father and her father's ex-wife, Addie. The characters are fairly well developed but the story only really comes alive when Sawyer's friend Seth is around. He's smart and funny and makes everyone else seem like cardboard characters at times. This book could easily have been a 5 star book if a good editor had slashed some of the unnecessary inner thoughts and overly descriptive passages. I intend to give Ms Kauffman another try as several reviewers have mentioned that her other books are much better.Sexual situations (PG-13) may offend some readers

5+ Stars Excellent! Stand-alone that is easy to follow. No graphic violence or drag-you-down drama.Compelling storyline with descriptive writing. The reader is drawn in to the people and the assorted projects.Believable characters with distinct personalities, positive attitudes and goals.Informative, thought-provoking, possibly inspiring, and entertaining dialogue.“I like keeping order. Call it childhood PTSD. Once I figured out that being on top of and ahead of things was far better than being behind and under things, I’ve worked hard to keep things on track and moving as smoothly as possible.”“I know what you mean. Like when a person is fired from a job and thinks, oh, that’s an opportunity to look for a job they really love, when maybe, if they examined their disappointment in the loss, what getting fired really did for them was make them recognize they already had the job they wanted, but didn’t work hard enough to keep it.”Short review: read it.The author has included links to various items that play a part in this story.I may re-read this story and look forward to more works by this author.

I thoroughly enjoyed Blue Hollow Falls, and may read the 2nd book, coming out soon, I believe. We meet Sunny, love child of a hippie Mom, who inherits part of an old mill in the hills of West Virginia. ... at the same time, she discovers she has a young half-sister, and a half-brother , Sawyer, who is handsome as they make 'em and a war -hero as well. And doting "Mom" to Sawyer, who believes in fate, and wants to bring this family together. I loved the way that the discovery of a huge Victorian-style greenhouse made the heroine almost start believing in fate, too. Really enjoyed this as a light, "escapism" ebook, that is humorous and heart-warming. At times, though, I did "scan over" some paragraphs that became just too slowed down by lengthy descriptions of some settings, which slowed down the slow-developing "chemistry" .

I didn't expect to like this. Oh, but I did. It started out slowly, or so I thought. Then I realized it was me. My attention span in this digital world is shorter than an army hair cut. But when I let myself slow down, I melded into the world. If you're looking for a 'wham bam thank you, Maam' ride in the hay truck this isn't it. What (lucky) you get is to shadow this richly woven tale of family and love. You'll taste the apple pie. Hear the hawks in the woods over the rush of the waterfall. See the stars. Feel the heat between Sunny and Sawyer. Find yourself wanting to move to that mill--heck, even want to pitch in and happily put your back out heaving slate tiles to the rugged Seth on the roof. AND the author made me laugh out loud. Stay with this all the way to the end. You'll be happy you did. Can't wait for the next book in this series!

What a wonderfull start for a new series! I enjoy the stories that involve the goodwill of whole comunities working for a common goal, as they usually give me a nice fuzzy good feeling. And I really liked the principal characters ,but also the secondary characters were well developed. It was a nice emotional story about finding family , friends and love. I really hope Ms Kaufmann writes really fast as I'm sitting on the edge anxiously waiting for Seth's story, I now I'll have a bit to wait as Stevie's comes first.

I bought this months ago and left it to the side. I picked it up when I wanted something to read and was rewarded with characters I liked. I wanted the story to continue. Definitely will read more from this author. I know 5 stars seem high and it's not perfect but how else can I tell an inspiring writer that I appreciate her and am happy to add to my favorites. I keep reading everything I can get my hands on after the fun I had with this book.

Donna Kauffman does it again. Few authors draw you into a community as well as she does. Oh how I wish Blue Hollow Falls was a real place. I'd be on my way there as soon as I could. By the end the cast of characters felt like family. Addie as the grandma and friend I would want, Bailey as the strong and brave little sister, Seth as the fun loving friend next door. And Sawyer and Sunny, drawn together through bizarre circumstances. Both brave and strong with plans for their future that didn't include each other. If you are looking for a summer escape to a place that will make you smile, and laugh and maybe even shed a happy tear or two, look no further than Blue Hollow Falls. I'm happy to be part of Team Blue Hollow Falls and can't wait for the next story.I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.

FINALLY! A book series that launched my 8 year old's love of reading! The illustrations are amazing and on every page, which keep kids' interested. Adventure, cliffhangers, great character development, and exciting storyline. The vocabulary is easy enough for a 2nd grader and the book is less than 100 pages, which creates a sense of accomplishment ("Mom! I finished the book already!"). I spied my resistant reader totally absorbed in the book, reading late into the night and early the next morning, which was so fun to see. Can't wait until book 3 is available!

my 5 year old son & 6 year old daughter LOOOOVE this series. We are on number 3 and they've each been amazing. It's the perfect blend of adventure & daring for both my kids to be on the edge of their seat. The only con is I have to have enough time to start & finish it in the same sitting because my kids will not wait to hear the end. It's that good. My daughter could read most of this on her own but it's something we enjoy as a family so I can't rate it's reading level for independent reading.

{My thoughts} – Tag, Skyla and Blaze continue on right where they had left off in the previous book. They continue on with the adventure of collecting all the Ember Stone pieces that they need in order to help defeat the Vulture Thorn. They end up going into the caverns and rescuing a lost seal as well as finding another piece to the stone. While in the cavern they have a run in with some of Thorn’s spies. If you’d like to know what happens you will need to read the book. I think that any child that enjoys reading about animals and adventures will enjoy reading this book as well.

I haven't actually read this book, but my 6 (almost 7 year old son) loves this book. He's been begging for more, so his Christmas gift will be the rest of the series that has been written.

I bought this for my classroom library. My third graders loved the first book in the series and looked up when book two was coming out. Then they kept asking me to buy it until I gave in.They have traded it around the classroom and almost everyone has read it. They are now bugging me about book three. Their enthusiam is the best recommendation.

My daughter loves these books. It is super hard to get her to read due to her learning disability. The font and print are easier for a child with dyslexia. The content keeps her engaged.

My 1st grade grandson loves this series of books. He couldn't wait for the second book to be available.

This series is very popular with my grandchildren! They just eat them up!

From Publishers Weekly

HFerris (Invincible Summer) tackles issues of tolerance, homosexuality and self-discovery in this insightful and atmospheric novel set in rodeo country. On the surface, John, the 18-year-old narrator, seems to fit right in: as he puts it, being a guy entails "riding spirited horses, being able to castrate fifty calves in an afternoon, and burping the alphabet after chugging a long-neck beer," as well as getting in fights and dating pretty girls. Even so, he feels like an "outsider." When his father sends him to a five-day rodeo school, John discovers a newfound passion in the danger and unpredictability of bull riding, in which the rider attempts to stay on the violently bucking bull for eight seconds, all the while being judged on style and grace. He also forges a highly charged friendship with Kit, another boy at rodeo school, whom John subsequently finds out is gay. John turns on Kit to silence a rumor, one of the many realistic, often subtle story elements that allow the reader to understand the nature of John's attraction to Kit well before John does. At the credible conclusion, readers find John coming to terms with his newfound self-knowledge but not yet able to share it with others. A fast-paced ride that will leave readers thinking. Ages 12-up. (Oct.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up-Between his junior and senior years in high school, John Ritchie and his best friend spend a week at rodeo school. One of the young men there, Kit, strikes John as intensely interesting, both in his graceful, confident demeanor and in his calm attitude toward both bulls and the town bully. After he returns home, John learns that Kit is gay. They meet from time to time during the summer, and at summer's end, John realizes that he is gay as well. Ferris tells this realistic story with insight and balance between revelation and ambivalence. The teenaged boys, with the exception of the bully, are well-rounded characters whose motives, self-understanding, and social awareness are differentiated, authentic, and, for the most part, compassionate. The adults, as well as the minor female characters, including John's three sisters, are also genuinely presented as imperfect but well intentioned. Older readers who have negotiated the earliest stages of coming out depicted here will understand that John's story is far from over. Younger readers who are unsure of their sexual identity may be made fearful by John's frank assessment of the hardships he faces in the upcoming year without any mediating thought that, once it's over, he'll have gotten through it, and will be able to start living in a new place. Ferris's novel should not stand alone as representing gay issues, but it is a good companion novel for booktalking along with Ronald Koertge's Arizona Kid (Avon, 1989) and Liza Ketchum's Blue Coyote (S & S, 1997).-Francisca Goldsmith, Berkeley Public Library, CACopyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

So sad though :(

The book was in excellent condition. Just what I've been looking for for years. Thank you!

I thought maybe I could get it a little sooner. Its just a book. The book was in good shape!

Kept me interested and I never put it down. I had to get it for school and didn't think I would like it

Not the 8 Seconds about Lane Frost

I really just couldn't get into this. The plot had great potential and I liked that it had a country/rodeo setting (something that's not as common in YA GLBT books), but it lacked that magic to pull me in. I found myself constantly putting this book down and struggling to stay motivated to finish it. The setting felt very dated in an almost cliche sort of way. The characters were flat and difficult to sympathize with. The "country" phrases were just hokey; I can't imagine teenagers talking the way the ones in this story did. I don't mind the adoring younger siblings, but six year old Clemmie was the most annoying, spoiled thing ever and I detested every scene that included her. I thought Kit would be an amazing character for John but the ending was a little severe. Also, John was supposedly "in love" with Kit; he said he felt the chemistry they shared but the few scenes in which they were getting closer were devoid of any heat or passion. We, as readers, don't feel their increasing bond for one another. The blurb says "fast-paced," but this was a very slow, boring read. Also, this is more of a coming-of-age story so don't go in expecting a heart-warming romance. About 8 years ago or so I read this book called Peter by Kate Walker which has a similar vibe/path to discovery as this one (albeit in an entirely different setting). I recall liking it very much and would recommend that one instead if you're looking for a YA novel showcasing a young man discovering his homosexuality.

The world of bull riding is not anything that I'm familiar with. Growing up in the suburbs, my life was skateboarding and walking down to the U-Totem to pick up the latest Archie comic book. But one great thing about dating is that you constantly and endlessly exposed to the new. My boyfriend, a rodeo fan, picked up this book on a recent trip and devoured it, and handing it to me saying "Read this". I did, and found a beautiful, intriguing coming out tale.John Ritchie is the main character, a normal teenage boy whose life on the ranch is seemingly idyllic. He has a family that loves him, chores to do, and a vision for his future, well as strong a vision that a teenage boy could have. His father suggests that he attend a rodeo school, which John cannot wait to attend. Going with his best friend Bobby, he meets Kit, a tall, strong cowboy with whom he feels an immediate attachment. Kit and John become friends, and spend their time at rodeo camp discussing how they've always felt different from others. Upon returning home from camp, John learns his new friend, challenging him to the core, both about his beliefs about homosexuality and his own internal struggling with it.Ferris does something wonderful with this story. She allows John's eventual discovery of who he is to come slowly and naturally. It's both sweet and without much fanfare, but powerful enough to launch John on the rocky and uneven path of acceptance we've all walked. For anyone just coming out, this book shows that path, a small section of it, as a positive step forward.Set in the world of rodeos, this book also serves as a primer for those of us city folk uninitiated with that world. The rodeo scenes were authentic and honest, and why anyone would want to sit on a bull for eight seconds is beyond me, but you appreciate the characters desires to do so.Eight Seconds is a powerful, simple coming out story, with an interesting, unexpected ending, that left me thinking for days, as I'm sure it would you.

A good book should take you to someplace new; new surroundings, new emotional territories, new ideas. Jean Ferris has done that in this book.In addition to the slightly exotic (to an Easterner, at least) world of Rodeo and Bull Riding, the delicate handling of a young man's heart facing a truth that will change him forever, is beautifully rendered.Johnny's thoughts on realizing that he is gay, and that facing that truth isn't nearly as bad as denying it, say it all:"Maybe love was love, no matter who was doing it, and if you found it, you should be glad, because it wasn't such an easy thing to find."A sensitive subject, sensitively handled. I hope this book gains a wide readership. It touched my heart.

A Very Good Read. I found the characters very well developed, the story entertaining and insightful and the personal spiritual journey of the main character real. Having been through something like Rose Brownlee twice myself, I easily identified with her journey. I loved the history of the mid-west during the late 1800's. I appreciated that the romance was not the central focus of the story, but it was a pleasant surprise. Thanks Vikki, for a great read and I'm looking forward to the next book. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an entertaining read and help in your walk with the Lord. And I was not given a copy of this book to read.

It's hard to say what this book meant to me. This story was wonderfully written. We begin Rose's journey so full of pain and then finally we finish it filled with such beauty. I was so touched as she sought God, learning to follow Him and hear Him speaking to her. It reminded me quite a bit of my own journey. I really love Ms. Kestell's writing style and voice. I will be recommending this book to EVERYONE.

This book had a light touch and a simple message: reliance on God. I loved the Biblical themes that bloomed in the story. An example of heaven on Earth is clearly illustrated, and I would expect that there will be readers who will want to experience more of the joy that comes from drawing strength from God. I really enjoyed reading this book and meeting such wonderful characters and seeing how God's love can build families.

I like this book and thought it was well written. It was my first time reading this particular author and I want to read more from her. The book talks about a woman becoming a widow and deciding to go out west for a change of scenery and deciding to live there.Money is not a problem for her as her husband has left her well off. I liked that she was making an impact on the community and in turn it impacts her. She finds God in a rural country church. The realization that she had thought she was a Christian all along and how she discovers the Lord is a relavant theme even for this day and age.

I really enjoyed this book. I was able to go right along as Rose learns to rely on God. Going through her trials and her joys as she learns about faith and what it really means and that what is more important is a relationship with God is exciting. Things are not easy for her really, but she learns through hard work and new friends that her peace is only in God. Then going with her as she takes what she has and her friendships and tries helping others to having a saving relationship with God is wonderful. This book is encouraging to anyone who wants to know God better and to share Him with others. It is also an encouraging book on pulling yourself out of trouble and learning to rely on God and good friends. I highly recommend this book. I took a lot away that I could use in my own life.

I was thoroughly captivated with this novel by Vikki Kestell. Ms. Kestell did an amazing job with the development of her characters. The female protagonist, Rose Brownlee, endures the tragic loss of her beloved husband and children. Struggling to cope with her grief, she begins to search for solace and starts her journey into her spiritual and emotional growth.A woman of independent means, Rose takes her destiny into her own hands when she decides to circumvent societal edicts concerning widows and ventures out to the West. Deciding to settle in a rural prairie settlement of River Bend, Rose deepens her relationship with God. She also carves out a place for her in this community. Bravely she learns to become a homesteader. The life of loneliness that society would have for her is changed by her bravery and acceptance of change and healing. This healing allows her to discover another love, Jan Thoresen, a Norwegian homesteader, who is also familiar with deep loss. This is definitely a Christian romance story that was well written. Kestell did a grand job of tying each of the main characters’ suffering, acceptance, and growth with Bible verses. They were woven together with finesse so as not to become overpowering or preaching in tone. I would recommend this book to anyone who is facing their own personal crisis due to loss of a love one. Just like the characters gained strength from the Biblical references so to can the reader.

It's a trap! They get you hooked by giving you the first book free. But it's like a gateway drug. Before you know it you're purchasing the second book, the third book and so forth. You stay up late nights and ignore other duties so that you can sequester yourself somewhere quiet, greedily devouring your recent purchase.Your bloodshot eyes tell the tale. Then suddenly, it's over. You've read all eight books in the series. You're clamoring for something more so you read, "Tabitha".Then you realize you have a long wait until November 2nd and the release of "Tory", and you wonder why you didn't pace yourself.lol It really was that good :-) BTW, I actually started this journey when I read the "NanoStealth" series. A series I highly recommend if you are not yet acquainted! And maybe you can tell from my name that I'm a dude. Now, if I can just convince Amazon that I'm not really interested in Romance Novels.......

This is the most beautifully written book. Rose's struggles are so real, her devastation, her rise to embracing her faith and the way that she loves and allows herself to be loved. I found myself in tears as I walked with Rose developing a real relationship with Jesus Christ, the friends she makes, the people who love her and she loves in return, her determination to make it work against all the odds. Her despair and her joy are so tangible. And Jan! What a man of God! Steadfast and determined to win her heart with patience and love. Such a wonderful book! I can't wait to finish this series and I just finished Tabitha so I am eagerly awaiting book 2 in this series. I didn't read them in order unfortunately so I was a bit out of sinc but it honestly didn't matter.

Wonderful book..comprehensive on Israel. A must buy!

A very helpful guide for visitin the Land of Israel!

This guidebook is adequate, nothing more. It offers very basic factual information but barely enough. Certainly it is an insufficient resource for planning a vacation to a place as historically and culturally rich as Israel. The three stars are for the beautiful photos.

Nothing better for before, during, and after a trip. It's my travel guide and history book all in one. Go for the book and not for the kindle version if you can as the photos are wonderful.
