Of the Dead Sea Scrolls, none has baffled experts more than the Copper Scroll, discovered in 1952 by a team of Bedouin led by Henri de Contenson of the École Biblique in East Jerusalem. Appearing to be a list of buried treasure engraved on copper pieces, the Copper Scroll has long been considered to be the work of a devout, secretive Jewish sect, the Essenes, who lived by the Dead Sea around the time of Jesus. Metallurgist Robert Feather demonstrates, however, that the weights and numbering systems used in the Copper Scroll are actually Egyptian in origin. He further shows how Greek characters inserted into the text of the Copper Scroll make clear references to the Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten. Feather’s findings support theories that the original priests of Akhenaten continued to pass on his religious teachings of monotheism and that those teachings directly impacted the theological evolution of ancient Judaism. I have read this once and will be reading it again (and possibly again). I love that the author is a metallurgist primarily and such has no agenda to make the history revealed around the Qumran Essenes and the Dead Sea Scrolls adhere to one doctrine or another. It makes perfect sense with so many biblical patriarchs influenced greatly by Egypt to compare the religion and tradition of Egypt with that of Judaism and it took someone like Feather, with no ulterior motives, so to speak, to do so. This is a gripping book that I found hard to put down and it is so full of knowledge it definitely can't be absorbed in one reading. Plus he straightens out the amount of treasure described by the scroll by attributing it to an Egyptian measuring system, which tracks much better in his estimation with the known amount of gold and other precious metals in circulation at that point in human history.
I've been fascinated with the life and times of the Pharaoh Akhenaten since I was a kid. This author's attempt to make a connection with the copper text that may serve in part as a textual treasure map to some of the valuables that were and/are still hidden in the ruins of Akhenaten's ruined city is an exciting prospect to me. I saw a documentary on cable TV in which the author went to a few of the spots in Akhetaten (aka Amarna), the city in question, and shared his frustration that no one was permitted to even do a little investigating to see if there really is something still concealed there. Some treasures have already been found in Akhetaten in places that appear to fit the text of the copper scroll almost perfectly, so maybe someday the Egyptian government will allow Barry Kemp or another archaeologist to check out these spots.I found this book dull reading except for the parts that directly addressed Akhenaten and his city. I also found felt the author glossed over the facts at times to make his imagined scenarios fit his overall picture. A fair amount of the info about Akhenaten's religious beliefs was quasi-factual or what the author wants to believe.Most of the book addresses the parts of the copper scroll the author feels that reference other sites in the Mid-East and his extremely detailed, overlong retelling of history. I wasn't interested in all that, so I found myself skipping sections here and there.Not a bad read that may someday be proven partially right or all wrong. Only time will tell. At least there are no aliens in this book's much more realistic suppositions. We've had far too much of that from so many other authors. I like history and fantasy, but not when they are intertwined with inaccuracy in order to sell more books.
Most of the book is about biblical archaeology and possible Egyptian roots of Jewish monotheism. The title refers to that one copper scroll found among the Dead Sea scrolls, but the book doesn't shed much light on the mystery or mysteries about it. I kept expecting to read something like an isotope analysis of the copper pointing to where it was mined and smelted, but apparently nobody's done that.
Professor Feather's analysis of the Copper Scroll unearthed at Qumran reveals the all-important connections between the Israelite patriarchs and dynasties of Egypt.Feather also reveals the reason for the impossible ages of patriarchs such as Abraham, Joseph and Moses, etc. They are based on squared numbers. Feather explains why the Bible's writers attributed elongated ages to the patriarchs of Israel.
I by no means ascribe wholeheartedly to the views given by Robert Feather, but they are certainly many facets to his propositions that will certainly spurn further research. I am more of the opinions of so-called biblical minimalists in viewing the historical veracity of the Old Testament as moot; with much having been composed at the Library of Alexandria during the Hellenistic Period. However, that is not to say that information gleaned from Egypt as a whole was not kept within the Library and mitigated by a select group of scribes. I am also not so critical of Feather's assessments of Elephantine. It was quite a wonderful read.
If you're the type of person who likes a good treasure hunt, than this is the book for you. Robert Feather has compiled a wealth of information about Egypt and the Holy lands in a nutshell. This book is valuable for both legitimate archaeological research organizations, or for amateurs like me who simply love to study the ancient texts. Robert Feather also gives full credit to John Allegro as few modern scholars do. It's disgraceful how many modern authors on Dead Sea Scroll topics never mention John Allegro or just include his name in a single footnote. As a scientist Robert Feather creates a matrix of the calendars, languages, writing systems, weights and measures, and many other attributes of the place and time. With this data properly organized he's able to correlate the exact amount of precious metal mentioned in the some of the copper scroll's inventory, with past archaeological discoveries. The framework created is elegant and harmonizes many other elements of the Holy Lands and Egypt. Bravo!
This is an excellent resource for the classes that I teach.
I have read other books on the copper scroll found in the '50s. I have not read this new book yet but a looking forward to spending a day or two reading it. I would buy other items from this group of sellers as the book came packaged in excellent condition, very fast response/delivery in a few days.
