His textbooks on have been widely used around the world, with a total sales of over 20,000 books. He earned his BS and MS from MIT in 1977 in the fields of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. In 1981, he received his PhD from Harvard-MIT in the field of biomedical engineering. He has over 100 journal papers, 9 book chapters and 10 patents in the medical device research area. He is a cofounder of a successful medical device company, specializing in miniature and low-power cardiac measurements. The reason he has received numerous teaching awards at the University of Texas is because he and his students share a common interest at the very core of the education process: the students' own success. Together with Professor Yerraballi he has produced two widely successful MOOCs on edX. "It is difficult to find a professor that tries harder to educate and inspire his students than Professor Valvano" - Robin Tsang. Good reference bookGood reference book, but does does not give the entire picture if you are just getting started. This is not an ease microcontroller family to learn, but well worth your effort and time. Use the TI LaunchPad TM4C123G LaunchPad.However, also I recommend the following documents and website on your journey to learn the ARM Cortex_M series of microcontorllers.1. This is in regard to the Kindle version of the book.It is absolutely atrocious! I bought the kindle version so I didn't have to carry around the book at school, however, I can't study the book very easily because the images for all the diagrams and figures in the e-book are too tiny to read. They expect you to have to long press each image and then touch the enlarge button to view each and every image (there are hundreds of images and they are paramount to learning the material). Well there are too many and it takes too long for this process to be a viable solution for any student who is trying to study the material actually learn something in a timely manner. It's ridiculous, and to top it all off, the PC version of Kindle doesn't even allow you to zoom into the images at all.Now I have to spend twice as much on a the paperback version of the book, with no hope of getting my money back from Kindle....
My main problem with the book is that it explains trivial stuff a lot while assuming knowledge of advanced topics. For example, he devotes several pages to basic elementary electronics, such as Ohms Law, I/V equations, and LEDs. At the same time, he dives right in to instruction sets and assembly functions with very little explanation. What EE/CompE/hobbyist is competent in assembly but has 0 knowledge of elementary circuits? The book would do well to cover assembly more in depth, if at all. Covering C only would probably meet much more peoples needs, including my own. I will say that when he does cover a topic, he does a good job giving you the necessary info; it is not a dry read.
*** DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION, BUY A BOUND COPY ***Assuming that you have made the decision to purchase, at least get bound copy. The content of the book is not bad. I got through three first 3 chapters and hated it because I couldn't understand what was going on, then I picked up the bound copy and figured out why. The pages are really wide so they don't fit in a kindle page correctly and the examples are all smooshed together making the examples very discontinuous. After figuring this out purchasing the bound copy, the content is only so so. It doesn't show examples from start for finish, it only seams to show examples bits of assembly code. If you have written assembly before, then I sure it would be fine because you would understand how to implement the code. However, it does show the bits of code next to a C version of the code which helps.*** Update *** This book was actually written to compliment the authors class so if you look, you can find their website which does have a lot of useful material. The additional material is organized well and tell which chapters in the book it's complimenting.
A decent reference, but could use more explanation around how some of the hex values for registers or what not are actually computed. Valvano goes from sentences such as "YOu need to unlock the pin" to using some value like &h40024FCA |0x80. I *think* the clues for how this is computed are hidden in here somewhere, but it is not clear. I expected more tutorials/background information in a textbook.
I got this for and online UTexas course presented by EdX. Book is very complete. It looks like a print on demand book so there are few errors that I found and none that were distracting. Very complete coverage of the ARM Cortex-M4 processor. The book uses the Texas Instruments Tiva LaunchPad as the specific ARM implementation discussed. Very complete and organized. Not just a retelling of the TI Data Sheet for the processor. Only detraction is the amount of time spent on introductory material like what is an embedded system, number systems, etc. This is supposed to be an EE/CS textbook. You should have seen these topics in your curriculum before you got here. Comes off as a lot of filler.
It's super hard to teach embedded systems to people who haven't learned all that much about compiles and computer architecture. I used this as a first year text book before I learned about compilers and comp arch and it is good as it gets. Great Teacher. too.
It's a great book if you lean towards assembly programming. I think it would have been perfect if it was just C. So much assembly throws me off.
