Gaslands is a game you can pick up on the first read through and play with Matchbox cars and dice. Lots of fun strategic movement and the shift mechanic keep the game interesting. Hours of fun on the weekends while cracking open a cold one with the boys, or even with the wife and kids.The Game is obviously heavily influenced by Mad Max and Deathrace movies. You race cars/bikes/trucks/buggies/buses/Monster Trucks/Tanks while shooting and ramming your opponents. The winner isn't usually the fastest but the car that can survive to reach the finish line!There is an official Gaslands site maintained by the author of the game with printable resources and links to an online car and team builder.The book contains the complete rules of the game, with templates you can photocopy in the back.If you are fond of Star Wars X-Wing movement mechanics, you will be quite happy with Gaslands. Your current speed determines what maneuvers you may choose from. You pick a maneuver, place the template, then roll the skid dice to see how much control you had over your high speed murder machine.
Great game with a modern rules set. Offers multiple modes of play. Opened ended so you can use different scale of cars. Uses templates to handle all maneuvering. If you ever played Car Wars you will appreciate the simplicity of this game but still get the same fun of blowing up other peoples cars.
This game at a glance vaguely reminds me of X-Wing (only in terms of movement template use, not setting or anything else) but does not require the player to "keep up" with new vehicles/supplements to get the latest cards. The setting is definitely a mix between the Deathrace movies and Mad Max, and that is what piqued my interest. The rules are nice and straightforward with turn and step timing clearly laid out. The game emphasizes risk taking and split second decisions (templates are used for moving and once you pick up a template you re required to use it, you cannot casually try several different templates to see which is best) as well as aggression, promoting shooting and smashing attacks with your cars. There are several vehicle build types from cars to motorcylces to war rigs to gyrocopters and attached point values to balance things out. The game is very template heavy (shooting attacks are even measured with movement templates) as well as token heavy. Generally I am not a fan of loads of templates or tokens (why I did not give this game 5 stars) but overall it does not bog things down much. Also there are a few pages in the back that can be photocopied to make your own templates and tokens (I ordered some of my own from the author) and in the states these can be found online. Also specialized dice called "skid dice" are very important, but again if you do not have these there is a D6 chart you can use. Overall I think this game is a blast and I highly recommend it!
This company knows how to pick winners! Very imaginative and clearly playtested vehicular mayhem. With an hour’s work copying and cutting and $10 dollars in toy cars, you can be playing a game of car wars and racing. Of course, you can also print 3D terrain, buy lots of mini weapons and armor, get a new game table and go insane. Not that I did this, of course.
I've been waiting for this game to exist for quite some time. Matchbox cars with weapons, driving around using templates and shooting/crashing into each other. Basic rules are simple to learn. Easy to build a squad. Cheapest miniatures game you'll ever get into. I've tried other games like this over the years, but they were all too fiddly / slow. This plays quickly and is ludicrously fun. Highly recommend it.
Fantastic vehicular mini war game for 2+ people. Inexpensive to buy in. Minimally requires this book, a few dollars of 1:64 scale cars, a copy machine, scissors, and a handful of six sided dice. Upgraded templates and "Skid Dice" are available from multiple sources. We use whatever template set is handy. Movement is similar to FFG's X-Wing/Attack Wing, but the Gaslands game system adds a unique feeling of speed and inertia. My gaming crew has been playing for the past few weeks, love it.
Gaslands is my favorite game right now. I love modding out the hotwheels scale cars and making terrain. But, you can play with cars right out of the package and terrain is optional. The rules are straightforward and the book is easy to use, and a pretty good value for being a complete game. You can also make your own movement templates or find them affordably to purchase. Dice are also necessary to play. But, all considered, it would be difficult to find a more affordable game to get into with hobby aspects. There's also a great supportive community out there if you get into the game. Fun for kids or adults to play.
Great game. Simple mechanics that allow for quick and easy play but leaves enough open to get into a much more involved game. Very low start cost as its all based around using Hot Wheels/Matchbox cars with as little or as much modification as you want to do. Multiple scenarios included in the book but its very easy to create your own within the rules.
