Review
This is one of the most thoughtful and well researched books on giving that I have had the pleasure of reading. The frameworks presented in the book can be used by people at all stages of experiencing the joy of generosity. -- Waters Davis, President of National Christian Foundation HoustonI greatly enjoyed reading God and Money! God used the framework Greg and John described to challenge my perspective and practice of generosity. I realized in reading their book that my personal bias is more saver and spender than servant. What I truly desire to be is a fully surrendered servant of Jesus. This book gave me practical frameworks to move in that direction. -- Todd Harper, President, Generous GivingThe mission of Harvard Business School is 'to educate leaders who make a difference in the world,' and in John and Greg that mission has been fulfilled abundantly. It has been my privilege to be their teacher, their colleague and now their friend; and I wish them Godspeed as they take the transformative message found in God and Money out to their community and to the world beyond. I have learned to expect great things from them, and they have yet to disappoint. -- Derek van Bever, Senior Lecturer in Business Administration; Director, Forum for Growth and Innovation, Harvard Business SchoolJohn and Greg realize what everyone should know-that middle-class Americans are among the richest people in world history. It's time for Christ-followers to understand that God has bigger purposes than increasing our standard of living-He wants us to increase our standard of giving. -- Randy Alcorn, bestselling author (from the Foreword of God and Money)

I thank God that he inspired John and Greg to write this book. I actually had the privilege of reading one of the early versions they wrote in 2015 when they were still at Harvard. In fact, it had a major transformative effect on myself, and my family’s life, and in the way that we think and act regarding the wealth that God has blessed us with. I am 52 and prior to reading this book, I had never asked myself the really important and tough questions like: How much ultimately does God want us to save? How much should we consume each year? How much can we actually give away of God’s money each year and how were we going to start imparting wisdom transfer to our kids so that they can handle any wealth transfer that might occur? After reading this book, everything did in fact “flipâ€. Instead of the guiding principle being “how much should we giveâ€, it became “how much should we keepâ€. We just fully came to terms with the fact that any money we have is God’s and we are just being asked to steward it in the manner that brings the most glory to Him. Today we have asked and answered those questions with the help of the wisdom provided in this book, many advisors who have traveled this path before us, and thankfully wisdom from God. As CEO of a 400 person company, this book has also had a great effect on how I run my business. We have started down the road of being a more generous company to our employees, those we serve, and the community and world at large. We are so excited about the road God has planned for our company in the years to come. The seven core principles for Biblical Wealth and Giving found on page 45 are the ones my wife and I believe will guide our actions around wealth and giving for the rest of our time here on earth. We do believe that the world is at a tipping point and that there can be a great acceleration of generosity led by Christians to greatly alleviate the conditions of the poor and to complete the Great Commission. We pray that God and Money will be a highly influential instrument that God will use to help this acceleration. Thank you so much, John and Greg for pouring yourselves into this, and being so transparent with your personal actions that they may serve as a useful guideline to others.
I serve as a development professional with a global ministry. Constantly I am reading books on generosity and what the Bible says about money. Also, as someone who is in his late 30's I understand the importance of developing the next generation of generous givers. So, when a friend shared Greg and John's video testimony I knew I needed to get my hands on this book. Well, the Lord allowed me to do one better, I had the privilege to meet both Greg and John and hear their heart behind the book and what God has taught them as a result of this journey. I walked away from both meetings praising God that both of these men are committed to helping raise up a generation of biblical stewards to impact the Kingdom of God!!!Now, the book... LOVED IT!!! In all honesty, there is nothing in it that I hadn't read before in terms of content, but rather it was the way it was packaged and presented that provided me several "ah ha" moments. Greg and John don't just give you biblical positions on what God says about money, they share their personal journeys as well as interviews with generous business leaders, and then give practical applications in how to start your own journey. I highly recommend this book. In fact, I've started to give it out as a gift to many of the donors I meet with on a regular basis.
This is a very thought-provoking book, whose fundamental premise can be applied to non-Christians as well as Christians. The ideas are grounded in the Bible and an explicitly Christian framework, but the concept of generosity as a spiritual and moral imperative translates well to many of the non-religious debates America is having today about economic inequality. (I should state here that the book is not political, but in reading it I found myself drawing many parallels to my own life and internal debates I have over the role of wealth in society.)"God and Money" is written in a very approachable and conversational style, and that makes it easy to understand and internalize the concepts. I kept pausing to read passages out loud to my family, and am asking them all to read it so we can have a family conversation about it. Most helpful are the exercises that help you identify where you are on the financial spectrum ("saver," "spender," or "servant") and specifically identify your needs and goals (from how much to keep in an "emergency fund" to how big of a house to own.)Most important: this book is *not* preachy or prescriptive! In reading it, I never felt guilt for past choices and never felt like I was being lectured by the authors. "God and Money" lays out guidelines for financial and philanthropic decision-making, but recognizes that everyone has unique personal situations that require a customized approach.Overall, it's a quick and easy read that leads to genuine self-reflection and actionable steps for change.
