not the best self-help tool for learning strategies or reviewing math concepts since there are no explanations given for the correct answers. I coach people for this test and if you are looking for self-help materials, I would recommend supplementing this volume with the Kaplan Verbal Workbook and/or Kaplan Math Workbook and/or the Princeton Review Math Workout. If you are weak in math,I'd advise both of the math volumes since they attack the material from different angles. When you have used these to get yourself test ready, use the 10 Real SATS book to practice actual tests (whose Math sections are somewhat easier than these practice books, and whose verbal sections are somewhat harder.) I bought my 10 real book, because it was recommedned to me at an SAT workshop. I will never regret spending the money. Since it gives you 10 real, used before SAT's it is most helpful to the first time test taker to learn the format, mainly the fact that you shouldn't answer every question on the SAT. I took the November 2000 test, and I actually saw an analogy question I had seen before in my 10 Real book. (This is because all SAT questions are recycled). The book also contains strategies. If nothing else, give your friends and family a test you have already practiced with, and let them give it a try to see how smart they are. It will make you feel better. I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially a first time tester with at least 2-3 weeks for practice. I have used most of the other SAT prep books, and this is king of the hill, no need buying the others. Good Luck!
I didn't realize that this book is over a decade old! The format of the math sections is outdated, as well as the number of questions in these sections.Although we did practice with some of the math and critical reading questions, I think the book is much too old to continue selling.
While the idea of ten real SATs is great, the first few chapters trying to help people improve their scores is a waste. The methods they use are horribly compared to the ones in Princeton Review's books. What it boils down to is this: if you need to improve your score, then get Princeton Review's Math and Verbal Workouts. If, instead, you just want to brush up and get comfortable with the test, then buy this. Take it from someone who has a best combined score of 1410.
Bought to help my 9th Grader get an early start and it did just that. Cheap enough to not care about writing on it and using for practice. Not perhaps the most current book but for general testing and mind exercises it is great.
