This is my favorite roleplaying game rules system yet. It is especially suited to games that feel more realistic.The dice mechanic allows for some rolls to follow a bell curve and for others to have a long tail (8-, 9-, and 10- agains). For me this flexibility allows for the greatest balance of simiplicity and verisimilitude in any roleplaying game system.I prefer health levels to the hit points of other games.You can run a solid game involving ordinary people with just this book. You could use it as the rule system for any setting.The "Combat Hacks" in the book Armory, Reloaded include many ways to modify the rules system to suit your style of play, from grittier to more over-the-top.
In the WoD series this book is the meat. All others are flavor.I love this book. The concept that everything I need to run any WoD game regardless of the flavor text used, I can refer to one core book. Combat, actions, reactions, flaws, merits, it's all here.Biggest Con - Too much fluff. For a core book that deals primarily with mechanics, it is not easy to find any particular piece of information. The organization of the book could be better, but for running any WoD game, or playing one, this is a must buy.

I had purchased another book in this genre before, but it was rather depressing. The WOD book, by contrast, makes the reader want to create his character and start roleplaying as soon as possible.This book contains rules and helpful information and tips for character creation, various potential scenarios, weapons, tools, movement, combat and other useful information. It also furnishes some examples of types of characters, although I get a bit confused on the number of dots beginning players are allowed, for character development.WOD is a great book to start your monster-hunting adventures.

The World of Darkness is just like our own, but as the creators themselves put it, "Shadows are deeper, nights are darker and fog is thicker". You can literally take advantage of any mystery you've ever heard or read about in your existence, from military and political complots, to enigmatic, esoteric and supernatural events in the history of the world. As the narrator or part of the group of players, you can either expand on this themes to create a thrilling atmosphere of dread and foreboding, or you can create your own plots from scratch just as if you were directing your own film with the help of the rest of the team. Sit down, read the magnificent flavour texts and stories within the rulebook and begin planning environments, characters and twists that would have you filled with edge-of-your-seat anticipation and emotion. I found this system a few years back and it has become my favorite RPG. This book serves as the core rules for all of the expansions (i.e. Vampire: the Requiem and Werewolf: the Forsaken)with lost of companion books, so combining pretty much any supernatural elements is seamless. While I have never been a huge fan of D&D I have played lots of D20 systems. The D10 system here is easy to learn and it has exploding dice (10 again), which I always prefer. World of darkness is the best system that I've seen for modern day settings. Also, it is the only one that I've come across that allows for a normal human character to stand a chance in a fantasy encounter.I recommend this game for anyone that's a fan of Buffy, Supernatural, Zombies, Vampires, Ghosts or pretty much any sort of horror genre.
This book is essential in order to play one of the core setting books such as Vampire the Requiem, Werewolf the Forsaken and Mage the Awakening. This book provides all the core rules and mechanics for character creation, combat, actions and the World of Darkness setting, a fictional world much like ours where the supernatural exists. White Wolf has produced books for the World of Darkness, their core game setting for many years, but this version presents a new "reboot" or re-imagining of their game world. Many of the mechanics have been fixed, such as massive dice pools which resulted in having more chances for a botch. Additionally, the game makes use of the common everyday Joe mortal as the basic character. You begin as a mortal and then may acquire one of the supernatural templates such as vampire, werewolf or mage.The introduction of virtures and vices adds an element of roleplaying that was missing in the previous version. To that add an extensive chapter on storytelling and setting building. One of the things I like most about this game is that you have so much development of the World of Darkness that you need never play a vampire or mage. Humans have as much devoted to them that it makes this a stand alone game if you decide not to purchase the vampire, werewolf or mage setting books.I was a fan of the old World of Darkness, but with this version I have become an avid gamer like never before.
book is as expected for content. You either want WoD or you don't. This book explains the dice and various elements of the game. Shipping was fast, well packaged, book in better than the "good" condition it was advertised as
This was my first purchase in this game system, and I haven't played it yet, but thought it was very well done. I don't have any previous WoD system to compare it to, but it seems there are a lot of older gamers who want to relive the glory days of previous editions. I thought this gave a lot of great example stories, and a lot of guidelines for creating a character, while still allowing for the flexibility of a storytelling genre. Like I said, I haven't played any WoD game yet, but this was a fun read, and I'm interested.
